Dunlop SP 9000 series ZR tires...

Post by abronco1 »

Does anyone else have the factory installed 17 inch rims with the Dunlop tires? I went to Dunlop's website and they said that you're not supposed to put any type of tire dressing/enhancement due to some sort of environmental protectant that is on the tire itself. Does anyone know what they put on, and why you're not supposed to put on Tire gloss?

Sounds like they treated the tires with something to prevent things like dry-rot and chemical wear of the tires due to things in the environment. Most tire gloss products contain petroleum-based ingredients that would probably destroy this "environmental protectant" on their tires. That is my guess.

I've only done it a couple times, but I will take it under advisement now. I have 12k on mine so far and haven't had any issue. These tires seems to be doing better than the Contis at least.

I was just curious about this issue, never heard of any such chemical to help protect the environment. Guess it's a good idea, and only time will tell. Thanks again!!

I have the 17's. I'm only counting on these dunlops lasting 40K tops since their a Z rated tread compound. I used armor all ultimate tire shine last weekend! I'm not going to worry about it.I read the website too. If you are that concerned, give them a call and get a more through explanation.Jason

I joined this a little late in the game, but here is the response from Goodyear about the Dunlops in regard to using tire dressings. I e-mailed them to ask for more detailed information other than their site, but see for yourself.quote:From: goodyear_cr@goodyear.com on 05/05/2003 01:20 PMSent by: Goodyear Tire & Rubber CompanyConsumer Relations 7391144 East Market StreetAkron, OH 44316Voice #: (800) 321-2136Fax #: (330) 796-3753Dear Nick,The reason we do not recommend application of any dressing to a tire isthat is can cause damage to the tire. The sidewall is the most vulnerablepart of the tire and should be treated as so. VickiI can see where they are coming from in a libility point of view, but I find it interesting that almost all car dealers apply tire gloss products on all their tires, no matter what brand/make/model. Maybe they use something other than publically available products, or they just don't care.Either way, as long as you scrub your tires with soap and a brush frequently, you won't get the tire gloss buildup and that will keep your tires in good condition.

I had a set of these on my old Neon R/T. Great tires, stuck like glue.As far as the item about using Tire Dressings voiding the warranty, IT'S TRUE! Something in the rubber compound that Dunlop uses in the sidewalls reacts with tire dressings. What ends up happening is each time you use the dressing, your taking a layer of sidewall off the tire. I had a sidewall blow out at 70 MPH because of this. Luckly being a dry straight unoccupied road and FWD, I made it to the side safely. Took the bad tires to 4 differnet tire places acting stupid each time and they all told me the same thing. If you use ANY tire dressings on these tires, DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK!

This also follows suit with most other tire companies as well... this one reply from Yokohama:quote:Most tire dressings are high in alcohol, which can dry out the sidewall ofthe tire. This can lead to cracking. We recommend warm soap and water.Thank you for contacting Yokohama Tire Corporation.
