Not sure if this should be posted in the "Exterior" section. Sorry if it is. I was hauling a small trailer recently when while driving at night I heard a pop sound and then my dash lights went to full brightness. I was not able to dim them at all. I also noticed that when I used the brake pedal my right turn indicator lit up as long as I had the brakes on? I found a 15 amp fuse blown and after replacing it I had control of my dash light dimmer but the right blinker was acting like it was part of the brake circuit. Had my wife push the brake pedal while I checked in the back. The turn signal came on with the brake lights. I also don't have any right signal but I have the left working ok?? Couldn't find any other blown fuses. Anybody have an idea? Thanks for the help!
Sounds like some of the wiring for the different light circuits shorted together. Have you removed any wiring harness connecting to the trailer lights?
The trailer is unplugged and It looks like there is no shorts in the wiring. The fuse I replaced was a 15 amp in the upper left corner marked "tail"Please keep the ideas rolling.
THere really isn't anything common between the tail lights, brake lights, and turn signal circuits except the wires and the light housingyou say there are no shorts, but did you mean in the trailer, or the car? Who wired the car to suport trailer lights? When you put on the right turn signal, do you hear the flasher relay click? Is the front right turn signal also not working?
Standard US trailer lighting has the brake lights and the turn signals on the same filament in the dual filament bulb, similar to how older cars were wired.Newer cars have turn signal lights separate from the brake lights. To connect the trailer to the car a converter is used. Do you have a converter? If so, disconnect it entirely, it may be damaged. If you don't have a converter, how was the trailer wiring done?

The hitch and wiring was done by the dealership I purchased it from. I found the converter box (Draw-Tight). Just for grins I removed the right turn lead coming from the converter to the right blinker. The problem then went away. jimincalf I think your right about the converter being damaged. Wonder if an intermit. short in the trailer could have taken the box out? Thanks for all the ideas...you guys are great!
Sounds like the converter is the culprit. Obviously a short occurred somewhere since the fuse blew. Could be the converter itself shorted, but more likely the trailer. Trailer wiring is exposed to the elements and often flakey. Yeah it could have overloaded and fried the converter.I used to have a trailer boat years ago. Got tired of having to mess with the lights every time I hooked up, so I took all the lights off the trailer and made up a set of lights mounted on a 1x4 that I could tie on to the back of the trailer. When not in used the lights stayed nice and dry in the garage. No more light problems.
