CEL code P0440

Post by redlava »

My CEL came on this morning and took it to Autozone to have it checked and it came back with a P0440 code which is an EVAP (Evaporative Emission System) small leak/no flow condition.Anybody had one of these pop up before? It isn't the fuel cap, I already checked it and tightened it. Which leaves the EVAP canister or hose, purge or vent solenoid, or a vacuum leak. I'm taking it to the dealership on Wednesday to have it diagnosed. Hopefully it won't cost me an appendage to fix.

This seems to be an extremely common problem with Vibes and GM trucks. Far too common in fact as in bogus parts.

It ended up being the gas cap. I unscrewed and then tightened it on Monday night and the CEL just went out tonight on my way to the dealership. I went anyway just to make sure, and the guy told me that there is a self check that the computer does when the fuel gauge is between 3/4 and 1/4 full. Makes sense. The CEL went on when I was near full and just went to under 3/4 full yesterday afternoon. Sounds to me like it is fixed. It only took 40 miles and 2 and a half days, but it worked itself out.

Glad you got it figured out. Also, it turned out to be the cheapest fix!
