Did I ever mention how much I HATE San Diego?!?!?!

Post by damronjr »

Grab a drink, this is gonna be long! Yeah, so as if it wasn't bad enough being stuck here, my HU (Pioneer Avic-D2) got stolen today! I leave it in front of my house all day every day, all night every night, for the past how many years, to have nothing happen to it. I drive it 2 blocks down the street to take something to my wife at her uncles house (even though I wanted to just stay home and watch the game), and sure enough at the park down the street they are having an event. Normally I would park right by the house or across the street in the red zone in front of the school b/c no one ever cares and it is only red during school hours, but this particular day they were running people out of the red zone due to the event and there was no parking in front of the house, so I parked it next to my wife's truck behind the library in the school parking lot just a few houses down and across the street from the house. We watch the Chargers game, then the wife leaves, and I was there planning to leave and go home to watch the Dallas game. Me and the wife's cousins start BSing and I'm there until the Dallas game starts, so I decide to stay there and watch it with them. Game starts, few minutes into it my alarm pager starts beeping. We look out the door across the street but can't really see the car very well b/c of where it is parked. We (me and 1 of the wife's cousins) start walking out of the house and down the street to see if we can see it b/c the pager keeps beeping. I see a silver Mustang parked next to my Vibe and parked opposite of me, with the passenger door open towards my passenger door. I figured someone must be hitting my car with their door, but as we get closer we see someone jump out of my car window and into the waiting open door of the Mustang. We start running towards them (stupid, might have had a gun or something!) and the burn out of the lot. All we got was different descriptions of the person and a description of the car. They left tracks out of the lot as they left but we didn't get a plate #. We get to the car and find the passenger side front window shattered into the car, and the HU is gone. All the plugs had been unplugged from the stereo minus a few wires that looked to be snapped. Called 911 (you wouldn't believe how long it takes to actually talk to someone!), waited for the police to arrive, they look around, get some info, take a few pics, and call it a day. No prints, no pics of the tracks, no looking for the car even though we gave them a description and where they headed, nothing! They tell me "sux to be you" basically and walk off. So guy gets away with my $1500 HU, insurance won't cover it b/c I didn't have it specified on my policy, so the window will get fixed (minus the tint, of course), and I might get a new OEM HU, but it won't work with all the crap I have in my car anyways. I can't wait to get the **** out of here! Pics coming soon.At least the Cowboys won, too bad I missed the entire game b/c of this!

They won't do crap, all they did was take some pics of my car. As for the HU, nope, got nothing to use as of right now. Haven't been using my car much anyways. This got me thinking of parting out my car now....

I had that happen to my Neon I always parked in the parking lot at the apt I lived at one night I got home too late to get a spot in the lot and had to park in the street. 4 in the morning I get a call from the cops saying I need to come down stairs. My drivers window was busted in and a nice big dent on the top of the door where the hit the car with a baseball bat. They got my cd's and my HU- the faceplate. The cop said" I just wanted to let you, know have a good night" 2 months later they call me and ask if I had any need information for them. I wanted to say I though it was your job to find the guy....I hope they find the guy, I just would not count on anything comming from it

It happened before to my wife's truck she had before, but they actually took fingerprints and DID find the guy. He had to pay her back in payments from his time in jail. They told her that if they took prints and she pressed charges they would pretty much definitely find the person who did it, b/c, at least here in CA, you have to give a thumbprint to get a license, so it was pretty likely the person who did it would be caught. They didn't care to bother with mine, and my wife called to complain, but they told her it was up to the reporting officer, and since he said no, that was about all we could do.

I wonder if you can get your own fingerprinting kit somewhere and do it yourself, then bring the evidence to the police? I would also think there are detectives for hire that can do this kind of thing. Maybe Pinkerton?

Maybe Pinkerton?HUGE legal issues with allowing a victim (or otherwise Joe Schmoe) to acquire fingerprints and have them run for legal purposes. Investigators are certified regularly for methodology used to take fingerprints and collect other evidence. If you get Joe Schmoe out there, there's no method to rigorously qualify the evidence collected and should be inadmissable in any court case. You may be able to hire a PI, but even their ability to gather evidence is hinderd. Most of what they are permitted to do is limited to visual monitoring and not physical evidence gathering.Back on topic, sucks this happened Jason...

i feel your pain jason. i've had 2 cars broken into, and 1 truck stolen. the only thing the cops helped out with was the stolen truck. the first time my stereo was stolen was at my house, and they broke into my cousin's truck too(she was at my house). i noticed my car was messed up after we first called the cops, so when he got there, he told me he didn't have time for 2 reports, and to make the report over the phone. she asked if he was gonna take prints, and the cop said "if i do that, anyone who touched your car is a suspect". then he put his hands all over her window and said "look, now i'm a suspect". after that, i don't call the cops for a stereo, i'll just handle it my own way. 99.99999% of the cops could care less. i've had several cops harass me in the 9 years i've been drivin, and they wonder why a lot of people could give two ***** about what happens to emi paid for the extra stereo coverage on my car before, and after a while, decided it was better to just not have the coverage and put the extra money they would charge me to the side every month. that way, if it happened again, i'd have the money to pay for it without my insurance rates goin up because of a stereo

Should have known better, but you get a sense of safety after so long and don't always make the best decisions. Lesson learned!

DOOOOD, that is horrible.... I don't want to "salt" the wound, but, having a double DIN HU is like having a BILLBOARD saying "steal me" If you decide to replace it, let me know, we can work on a false face for it made from the factory unit... OR get a single DIN flip unit... Man, this sucks, i hate reading these posts... I really feel for you man... Looks like you have some KILLER RCA cables at least... Monster?? 401??

Be thankful you have the silent pager. If only you had a loud alarm to go with it so they would have been somewhat spooked, like a talking alarm or something. If you didn't have that alarm who knows what else they might have taken. Someday in the near future even small components like aftermarket head units will come with some sort of lojack equipment, just like Dogs have on their collars now. Shouldn't be too hard. Then they can be tracked and lord only knows the amount of underground stuff the cops could uncover with that.

Damn... I wish I could help. I still can't get over why people find it necessary to steal from other people that work hard for their stuff. Oh I know, cause those ****** are pieces of **** that can't keep jobs and work hard and save up for their stuff like the rest of us. Plusthey have to pay all that credit card debt off, and live off of wellfare.
