You access the bulbs from the inside. In the middle of the plastic panel, there is a smaller rectangular panel that you pop out. You can see the backs of the bulbs from there. You just twist the harness to unlock it. Space is tight and sometimes they can be pretty stuck in there.

I had LED's in mine, but ran into issues with them not being bright enough. That whole directional thing with how LED's light up and the position the bulbs mount in the assembly kinda clashed. The tip of the bulb would face straight back instead of downward so more light could shine down to the plate. They still worked, but they were dim. I tried both the white single LED units with the light diffuser thingy, and also tried the 6-LED ones from superbrightleds.com. The 6-LED ones would pop out of the socket when you closed the hatch since they were so top heavy. The single LED one was better, it actually put out more usable light than the ones with more LED's but still was dim. I had those in the car for quite a while but ended up going back to the incandescents. The current car, one day I'll throw some LED's in that puppy. It takes one of the longer festoon type bulbs and I can angle it directly down to the plate. Schweet. I'll buy 'em from superbrightleds for sure, they're pretty good to deal with.
