I was considering getting some winter tires from Tirerack (Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3) and was wondering what is a good price to pay for mounting them on my alloys? I have seen prices anywhere from $3.50 a tire (local Wal-Mart) to $16 a tire at Discount Tire. Any comments?

If the Walmart in your area is as bad as the one I shop at, I wouldn't let them mount a bicycle tire. Tire Rack has an installation service that uses local shops, you can even have the tires shipped to the installer you choose. here's the link: http://www.tirerack.com/installer/index.jspAt least it will give you an idea of what the shops near you are charging. Here in NY, $15.00 seems to be the average price per tire.
It cost me 17.00 per tire here in PA. Mounted balanced and new valve stem.3.50 a tire?? something is not right there.. avoid wal-crap... i mean wal-mart.

Hi MRVIBE,If you're considering getting your tires mounted at Discount Tire, why not get the tires there as well. That way if you have any problems, you can take em back to where you got em. I also believe that Discount TIre offers lifetime balance and rotations. If you got the tires elsewhere, I'm sure they wouldn't offer that. That in itself might be worth a possible added cost. Dave
I would like to get the tires a Discount Tire but I can get them cheaper at Tirerack. I also might go with the ship-to-the-installer thing. Sounds like a good idea. If I can get them done for like $10-15 a tire, I will be happy. Thanks for the suggestions though!!!

I have the same winter tires on my GT. I bought them from Tire Rack and had them installed at Discount Tire. It cost about $10 per tire to get them mounted. Even with mounting and shipping, I saved close to $40 PER TIRE over what stores wanted locally for snow tires. When they were mounting them, the sales guy offered me the Road Hazard protection since they sell the same tires. He told me it was $12.50 per tire but if I bought it, I'd get lifetime rotations and free mounting. I took that deal.

How do you like the Dunlops? They pretty good? I was really impressed with all of the reviews. Everyone seemed to like them and with an average of 8.51 out of 10, it doesn't look like I can go wrong with them!

Any comments?I give you a whole hearted YES to getting winter tires, but honestly if i were you, i would get a set of steel wheels to put them on... and i would get a - sized tire/wheel like a 15" wheel with a 195/65-15 tire... A. You won't mess up your summer wheelsB. You'll run less of a chance of some shlep killing the finish on your sumer wheelsC. Who cares if the steel wheels get covered in road salt and grimeD. taller thinner tires do better in the snow and slush of winter... E. smaller tires are cheaper...
I have my summer tires on now with the summer wheels plus I got a set of the alloys in the basement for the winter tires. Wouldn't want to buy a 3rd set of rims for my winter tires. I will stick with the alloys. Thanks for the info though!

Oh, i didn't realize you had a spare set of alloys... yeah go with them.... What kind of weather do you usually get there and how are the roads generally??
Well, here in Central IN, we get our fair share of snow and ice in the winter. But sometimes there is a streach of no snow that we have dry roads and then "BAM!!!", we get hit with like a foot or better. I like the Dunlops because on Tire Rack, they have a really good rating plus the price is great! Comes out to just under $100.00 a tire with shipping and tax. Now I just have to find somewhere to get them mounted.

Yeah man, they are a good tire, i tried looking them up on DTD and they only had one size of them in a 18" So i guess you are doing good on price... DTD has free shipping...

This coming winter will be my third season with the Dunlops.

They won't guarantee the tires if you don't get them from them, and their installation charge is higher for shipped in tires.I was at Discount today to get an estimate. Their price on the tires I wanted was $3 per tire more after adding shipping, and they will match the price+shipping. But, by the time you add shipping, balancing, valves, and installation it comes out pretty close. Their tire protection price of $12.50 per tire covers lifetime replacement for any reason, balancing and rotations, and just about anything you can think of. I think they have a cheaper warranty option too.I had heard they treat you right, and my experience bears that out. Today I went in because I had two low tires. They fixed both that had nails in them, balanced them and rotated. Charge $zero, even though I didn't buy from them or even ever been in their store. Plus they gave me a coupon for cash off for when I do purchase tires. Guess where I'll likely get my tires?

I would LOVE to get the tires that I want at Discount Tire but unfortunately, they do not carry the size (215/55/16) in the tire (Dunlop MP Winter Sport M3) I want. The only way that they can get it is to order in from Tire Rack. And I have already talked to them about that. They (discount Tire) would get charged $15 a tire shipping and I would only get charged like $34 for all 4. Might try to talk to them again and see what I can work out.
