high elevation break in? (HELP!!!)

Post by wyatt89 »

i have a serious issue that has me paranoid. i moved from texas to wyoming (the elevation changed from about 400 to 7900) and my car has been running like crap since then, is there a period of time that the car takes to get used to the much thinner air?do i need to have my ecu reset or will this problem correct itself?i have been running premium gas and i have always put synthetic oil in it.please help me!!!

To reset the ECU just disconnect the negative battery terminal for about 10-30 minutes. 7,900 ft. is pretty high, it's about a mile and a half. The premium gas won't help unless you're driving a Vibe GT. What you're lacking is oxygen.

What do you mean by "runs like crap"? At that elevation your down to about 99hp from 130hp.7900 X .03 X 130 / 1000 = 30.81 less hp than at sea levelhttp://www.offroaders.com/info...m.htm

supercharge...honestly elevation is the reason superchargers and turbochargers were invented...to help combat the loss of oxygen of planes in the WW2 era. one example being the p38 lightning...and another being the Boeing B27 bomber... they wanted the planes to be able to fly higher...so to combat the loss of oxygen(and loss of hp there of) they had to force more air in. maybe i shouldn't say invented...but more applied to gas engines.

Actually, the supercharger was patented by Francis Roots in 1860, some 80 years before WWII. The GM Vibe supercharger is a roots type/design.

i personally like prochargers as my bro has one on his camaro ss, that thing sounds sweet i dont think that is a roots type, i think it is called a centrifugal supercharger but i may be wrong...i wish i could put one on my gt though

Quote, originally posted by wyatt89 »...i moved from texas to wyoming (the elevation changed from about 400 to 7900) and my car has been running like crap since then...do i need to have my ecu reset or will this problem correct itself?Years ago, when I moved from FL to the mountains in Utah, elevation 10' to 6500', I was told the car needed to be taken in to be retuned due to the difference. (not a Vibe) Not sure if that holds true with the newer cars though. Also, the octane level is lower in the mountains. Consider that I was a flat lander going to a frequent up or down hill environment which required adjusting my driving style.

Hey, if you got enough money to throw at, that V8 in your bro's SS will likely shoehorn right in to your Vibe. If a Viper V-10 can be squished into a PT Cruiser, then a GM small block would surely fit in a Vibe. Now that would be fun.

Not when you put a 6 speed and a furd 9" behind it. The only thing that blows up is rear tires.

That PT Viper Pickup is wicked. There's a company that does 426 Hemi PT's as well. I think they are mid-engine though.
