Ball joints?

How do I check to see if they need to be replaced? I'm approaching 101k miles at the end of this week, and if I can stiffen up the steering a little bit, I'll be happy. I ask because I believe I'm hearing bearing hum from the front wheel bearings, and if I'm going to take the knuckles off I'd rather do everything all at once, get an alignment, and be done with it.Is there a way to check for wear, or is there even a need to check? I have no idea how long these last...

Don't worry about checking them, just replace them, like you said, you have 101K miles on them and they're bound to have some wear.

Usually, if there is play, you can lift the corner and rock the wheel slightly... I have 145k on my Subaru with no sign of the ball joints needing anything... Just a thought...

I did this test, and have found no play in them. I did however find torn shock boots, and my front bearings are humming louder and louder...
