Clacking rattle under acceleration

I have a clacking sort of rattle during acceleration coming from what appears to be the front passenger side of the Vibe. It seems to only happen under acceleration, and especially when the engine bogs down because I'm in too high a gear.It doesn't really sound like an exhaust shield most of the time, and it also doesn't happen ever time I drive.Any ideas?

Sounds like it is the Belt Tensioner pulley. This is a common issue for the Vibe, Matrix & Corolla. Mine has done the same thing for about 10,000 miles now. It won't harm anything if left for a while, but it will get more annoying as time goes on. With the engine off and cooled down, reach down and wiggle the belt next to the tensioner pulley and also grab the pulley itself and move it also to see if there is any play in it. I would have a shop confirm it before you replace it or have them replace it.

You know, that sounds like it would be it. How much should that part cost me? I see a "Belt Tensioner" made by Gates on RockAuto.com for $70. Is that the part? Also, I see that I can just buy the pully for $12...how do I know if I need a new pully or a whole new assembly?

Okay guys, I really need some help on this one because a new symptom has appeared and I'm going to drive 100 miles to beach this weekend.With the engine idling and the 5 speed transmission in neutral, I get a clicking/clacking noise coming from the transmission that is similar to what I was describing while driving. If I give it some gas, it goes away. I opened up the hood and the noise wasn't anywhere close to the belts, it was on the other side around the transaxle.Please don't tell me I have a bad transmission...

I don't kill it...I usually shift at 3k RPMs, however, I did just purchase this Vibe and was really hard on the transmission the first couple days as I learned how to drive manual.I replaced the tensioner pully last night and that definitely was NOT the problem.Lets let this thread die...continuting discussions will be in the "5 speed transmission problems" thread
