I have a friend who is looking for some motorcycle parts (I won't ride 'em) for a project of his. No, he's not building a bike up - more of a quasi sandrail.Anyways, he's looking for an online vendor where he can browse around looking for motorcycle transmissions. He has no clue which tranny he wants - he just knows he wants to check for prices. Also, despite my arguments, he wants a transmission with a belt drive (I know Harley and Buell have some but clueless as to what models they are). Any recommendations on models or websites? I think he is looking for something like Pam's Auto where he can browse parts and price.

I think most motorcycle trannys (Japanese) are integral parts of the engine. IOW, the motor/tranny share the same cases. Harleys are the exception (I think) by having a tranny unit separate from the engine, at least some do. I'm sure there are other lesser known makes that have a separate engine/tranny combo's but they may be hard to come by. Belt drive has little or nothing to do with tranny. If the tranny output shaft has a pulley, then it's belt drive however, the pulley can easily be replaced with a sprocket for chain drive. Obviously either two pulleys or two sprockets are required. Not sure what you mean by 'quasi sandrail'. The sand rails I've seen have a tremendous amount of wheel spin and I would think that would shred a belt drive in short order.
The big question is,what type of bike is it for. That can help us point you in the right direction. If it's Harley's he's looking for, then he would be looking at the big twins, the tranny is a seperate unit, not sportsters because they have it integrated as one unit with the engine.

He's starting to build a custom electric car. The motor is designed to run at 2400 rpm at peak efficiency. I have suggested looking at a torque-averter (similar to snowmobiles), that will keep a constant motor speed but vary the vehicle speed, but he wants a motorcycle tranny so he can shift. I just threw it out here as a favor to him. Thanks for the feedback

Is he looking for a new part, or something used? Both Honda and Suzuki had some bikes in the late 70s and early 80s that had belt drives.I'm not entirely certain how one would get the tranny to shift without the lever, though. I'm not sure about the Hondamatics. Some of those could have been belt drive. But, even they weren't TRUE automatics. They were simply 2 speed clutchless transmissions.
