I threw that number out there, but apparently people are already doing it. By flying to 5 outside countries, including Jamaica, Canada, Caribbean to name a few. They pay for the trips through that secondary country and no passports are stamped in Cuba, so technically they never left country number 2. People are even pulling into Havana on their personal boats time to time. Estimate about 2,000 American Tourists a day are there they said. Right now two Senators are putting a bill together to essentially end the travel ban so that we can go there, get flights directly to there and buy things there. As well as the fact that Cruise lines are already setting up a bunch of planned trips to the island and hotel chains worldwide are drooling to do business there. Apparently estimates range that other similar places for vacations could decline 20-25% when Cuba becomes the NEW spot!Personally, I would love to go there within the next 10 years for a vacation. When the new guy comes into power, I'm sure they are not going to drop Communism immediately, but possibly adopt a different form of it such as China does so that it enables commerce and the like. I would love to check that island out and maybe go peak at Guantanamo which by then may be just a closed down fort. So would you go there? Have you been there?
I'd like to go just to see all of the cars they have there... Autoweek did an article about cars in Cuba a few years back, it was interesting. Tons and tons of classic American cars there that have lasted so many years...

I've been to Cuba, and it's a bit overrated.I live in Canada so we have direct flights for very reasonable prices. There are many older American cars, but most are POS,it's a poor country and it reminds me of Mexico with bland food. But the cigars and beaches make up for everything else.

I went to Cuba in January. I loved it. The country is very safe for tourists, unlike Mexico. There are a lot of old cars as mentioned, but I was surprised by the number of brand new cars I saw. And the beach is to die for and I'm not even a "beach person." But yeah food is bland, but not bad - the pizza at Sandals was really, really good. As kevera said flights from Canada to Cuba are really reasonable. You can do an all inclusive including airfare for under $1K.

So it is pretty safe now huh, maybe I'll have to look into this spot earlier than I thought. As far as why we do not have relations with Cuba, ever hear of the Cuban Missile Crisis. After the revolution in Cuba and the ousting of Batista and power gain of the then Prime Minister Castro, they started to take over privatized business turning towards Communism. All the mob influence on the island in hotels and gambling were essentially kicked out and that's when many Cuban fled to Miami. Then the Russians setup the missiles aimes at our shores and since Eisenhower and Castro already were at odds with each other, now JFK came to power and imposed the Cuban Trade Embargo in like 1960 I think. But aside from that, the last time Castro was on American soil was in 1959, but he never met with Eisenhower. So since then we have severed ties with them and only maintain Guantanamo for terrorists and other POWs.
