General Exclaim UHP 235/45/17ZR

Post by vibecrxsi240sxse »

Got some new shoes for my '04 Vibe a couple of days ago....My OEM Bridgestones were about 40 miles shy of 36,000 miles and were well worn. The tread depth was down to 4/32", which is WAY low when driven in the rain.In fact, Tirerack.com has a good video demonstrating the wet panic stop distances with 3 different tread depth tire scenarios. The test car stopped in like 195ft, in the wet, with brand new 10/32" tread. The same car took 290ft to stop in the wet with tires worn to 4/32". Finally, the test car was panic stopped with 2/32" on all four tires and it took 385ft to come to a stop!!!!The last test noted that the 2/32" tire car was still going 44mph at the point where the new tires had stopped the same car. WHOA!!!So, I stuffed some General Exclaim UHP on my 17" stockers. After doing a tire size calculator comparison, I decided on 235/45/ZR17 for size.... and they look great! They're on my wife's vibe, so I'm not driving on them, but the brief time I did drive on them, they felt solid and sticky. Cost at discount tire was $98 each with a $10 per tire rebate and if you used your discount tire credit card, you got an additional $25 rebate (mail in). That makes each tire cost about $80 each b4 mounting, valve stem, balancing, etc... install fees. Here is a couple of pics.

That's cool man, I sure wish you would have stopped in and discussed this before hand though, i would have steered you clear of them... I've spent MUCH time on my Subaru board reaserching tires (more of a performance site for sure) and they get high marks on the Tire Rack site, but very low marks on my subaru site.... I mean, don't get me wrong, i am sure you will be happy with them, but you prolly could have gotten better for less in the Kumho SPT... Reguardless, i'm happy you are happy... i'll be getting SPT's for my vibe when the time comes... Just another quick note, if you get yourself a online photo host like Photobucket.com, you can store your pics online and use the [ IMG] [/IMG] tags to place your pics in the post like you seein a lot of people doing... OR you can use the edit to take the URL (from the adress bar up top) and place the tags on the pics like below... like so...

Probably a lot better tires out there, but this one got high marks at discount site as well as tirerack. My wife and I are in our early 40's and don't really wail on our cars.... that is what my 240SX is for.I just like the aggressive tread and width that the new size shows.Plus, being old farts, I just didn't feel comfortable on tires with 4/32" on them. We have 2 young boys under 11 yrs old and safety becomes more important as you get older. Not saying that safety isn't important to all age groups. We also tow a popup camper with our Vibe and you gotta have good tires when you tow stuff.

I almost got the UHP's but went for Nitto NeoGen instead. I do wail on the Vibe and I'm 47. The Nitto's are wickedly sticky. I'm sure the UHP's will do you well.

Neo Gen at discounttire website is more expensive, although not by much. What size tire did you get? I also noticed the treadwear rating is 280, which is basically what came OEM Bridgestones. I got the 380 treadwear on the Generals, I'm all for getting the most for my $.

I have 225/45/17 because I had 205/55/16 stock and I did get them at discount tire.I love their free shipping. I have Nokian snow tires that I use from November to April so I wanted a nice sticky performance tire for summer.

Also, looking back i didn't realize just what your intent for the tires were, so how could i have mad suggestions based on, well, nothing... Keep us up to date on the tires, the info is worth it's weight in oil.... lol

I've felt that way before, what a feeling... and you don't have to put up with any flack... you park'em in the garage, drive'em hard when YOU feel like it, keep'em happy with nothing but fluids and mods (very like a woman) and they never talk back...

Reviving an old thread from dang near 10 months ago...The tires are wearing and performing great!!Now at 43,600 on June 3, 2008 ... 10 months and still at 9/32" at all 4 corners after 7500 miles of use. They started at 10/32" new!I am impressed and would highly recommend them to anyone who encounters the same kind of conditions I do..... no snow/ice but maybe lots of rain and high heat conditions.
