Front rotor Scratches Less than 3k miles

Post by x10 »

Hey I'm new to the Vibe but an old hat at garage stuff,I did my first Oil change this weekend and while it was up on the lift noticed that the outside of my rotors is wearing very scratched while the inside is smooth. I find this disturbing and if I was doing a brake job on this car I would put new rotors on this car immeadiatly. Anyone else see this and if so was there a recall or TSB

You may have gotten a pebble or two stuck in between the caliper and the rotor. Additionally, it may have occurred recently, which would be the reason for the noticeable scratching. I'd check to see if the pads are glazed. If they aren't, then I think you may have just had some pebbles. If they are glazed, you may have some bigger problems...

This is no debris type it is even across the whole mating surface of the rotor, there is not excess brake dust, noise, or rough pedal during braking, The only thing I've noticed is down some of the steep hills I have an increase in brake power but I attributed this to the Emergency brake boost thats built into the system

Sounds like Subaru brakes to me.!!! Did you happen to do a proper bedding/seasoning on the pads/rotors when you got it?? I'm assuming you got it new? If you did not, or have never heard of what i'm talking about (which i'm sure you have, but, some haven't for sure) Take a look at the http://www.baer.com/ site under Baer Tech and there is a really good guide to the proper steps. I can atest to the fact that this REALLY works. You might have to get the rotors turned and do the seasioning again, but that's not that big of a deal... It really sounds like the metal of the rotors isn't hardened properly causeing the pads to gall... I'm far from an expert though.... What i CAN tell you is i've had the same set of crossdrilled rotors on my Subaru for 5-6yrs and i believe that proper seasioning of the rotors is what has made this happen... I''m not easy on brakes...

My OEM brakes on the Trix had scratches on the rotors, fairly odd but I replaced the pads with a semi-metallic ceramic mix pad and powerslot rotors, huge difference.
