I have decided to try a fast starting today. All this is under the guidance of my brother (doctor of chiropractic and nutrition). I will be checking in with him every day to tell him how I am doing. I am drinking water w/ essential amino acids, protein shakes as needed to retain muscle, Herbal tea for fasting and a "green" juice blend full of vitamins and nutrients. I will also be measuring my ketone levels several times a day. I have been wanting to do one for a couple years now and have decided that now is the time. I have been wanting to start a healthier diet so this will help purge all the crap out and detox my body. This will also be the perfect time for me to stop drinking soda/pop which I have been wanting to also do for a while. I will be going for as long as 10 days if possible. If at anytime I am feeling too lightheaded, dizzy or sick, I will be stopping immediately and slowly introduce some light fruits and veggies back into my body. Once I am back to eating regular healthy foods for a while, I will then introduce a light exercise program into my daily routine. I will keep a daily log starting tomorrow detailing the previous days events.Starting weight: 181.8lbsStarting Body Fat: 32.2%Wish me luck! Day 1: Didn't have any hunger pains, drank lots of water, tea and a protein drink. Got tired and went to bed earlier than normal.Day 2: Woke up earlier than normal and felt pretty good, had more energy than yesterday. Didn't feel as hungry as I did yesterday. Didn't feel the need for as much water as yesterday, but drank as much as I could handle, tea and a protein drink. I'll be going to bed early again, I'm already crashing @ 8:45pm. I got a lot of work done today mainly because I got up earlier. Day 3: Woke up feeling a little hungry, not too bad though. I think the protein drinks are helping a lot for that. I drank less water today and didn't have to pee as much as the first two days. the first 2 days I pee'd about 10 times. I am surprised at how easy this has been so far. I am wondering how the next few days will be. If I put a steak in the blender and puree it, is that considered a liquid drink? LOL! J/K! Day 4: Today Dr. John (my brother) had me start on some fresh fruit and veggie juices consisting of apple, carrot & celery using our juicer. This,in addition to what I have been already drinking, will help to cleanse my system better, he said. Today was not bad, I did get a little light headed while exerting myself and then I took a break, had a shake & no it wasn't steak. lol. the rest of the day was good.Day 5: Slept in today and didn't even feel hungry until 11:00am. Then was tempted by homemade chow mein at my dad's birthday dinner. I took some home and froze it for after I am done and eating regular food again. Didn't have as much water today. I'm sure I'll need more tomorrow. Everything is going great so far!Day: 6: Today was good! Keeping steady on drinking all the water, protein drinks and fruit/veggie drinks. Getting some slight cramps, gas and I pooped today. Woot!!! Only 3 days left then on to start some solid food like actually eating fruits and veggies instead of drinking them. lol.Day 7: Another fabulous day! This is easy as pie. I mean this a piece of cake! No wait.....Day 8: A good day yesterday. Same as the other days. Added some strawberries and grapes to the veggie/fruit juice mixture. Yummy! Doing this definitely helps give you a new appreciation for food and that we are all very fortunate to have what we have and are able to eat the food that we can. One day left! Woot!!! DAy 9: Last Day!!!!! Celebrated tonight by actually eating 1/2 an apple. I'm glad I did it, but I am also glad I am finished with it.It was easier than I thought it was going to be. I think only because of the protein shakes and the veggie juice drinks. I got rid of a lot of crap (literally and figuratively).I was surprised to see I lost 8.2 lbs. I guessed around 5lbs or so. Body fat % went up only .5% which Dr John said is great! That means I was losing fat & not losing muscle while on this fast. Now I get to eat fruits, veggies and fiber for a few days while still drinking the protein drinks. Then work in some egg white, fish, chicken & turkey. No red meats for a while and then only once and a while. Light exercising starts next week also. Yippee! Overall, I am happy with how everything went.Ending weight: 173.6lbs (lost 8.2 lbs overall)Ending Body Fat: 32.7% (lost 2lbs of fat)That means I got rid of 6lbs of miscellaneous junk during my detox/fast!Mission Accomplished!

Good Luck Brian!!I hope you do well...I definatly could eat healthier myself....I'm proud that i kicked the caffiene habit. Now I only get it in chocolate.
Juice? Tea? Protein shakes? Where are the steaks in that diet? Where are the Chee-tos? The Ho-Ho's? The diet Coke for the love of God??? It's been tickling the back of my mind, but now I know for sure--you Minnesotans are CRAZY! Ok ok....good luck--you are a stronger man than I. Keep us posted on how you are doing. My mom was a big time health nut when I was growing up. I've done the body fasts of 3 days on sea (salt) water and orange juice several times. Doubt I'd last 10 days though.

182lbs w/ 32% fat? How tall are you? Sounds like a cool idea, wish I could get myself to do that! I know my body really needs it, and I could sure use to lose a few pounds! Right now I'm 5'11", 230lbs, and probably more than 32% fat. Good luck with that and keep us posted on how it turns out and how it affects you! I did do 3-4 days of just water from a water fountain and a daily multi-vitamin b/c I didn't have any money to go to a fast food restaurant, didn't know anybody, and didn't know where the galley was on base! lol Finally a guy asked me if I had eaten at the galley, and when I told him my story (he worked there and lived right next door lol) he showed me right away where it was! It didn't bother me at all though.

I never said I was overweight. I'm not doing this to lose weight, it is to detox my body before I start eating better and cut out a lot of the crap that I have been eating for so many years. Then while eating healthier, start to exercise to lower my body fat percentage and increase my muscle mass. I would love to stay at 180, just with better ratios.

Man I wish I was only 181 pounds! Can't seem to get below 205.Good luck on the fasting. I have to fast once in awhile for blood work (I'm diabetic). But that's only for 10-12 hours or so. For that 10-12 hours though, people tend to avoid me!

What is your reasoning - weight loss?Do you realize that eating more will actually help you lose weight faster than eating less? By not eating, your body craves the fat it already has, and "protects" it. If you eat 5-6 reasonably sizes generally healthy meals per day, and don't eat after 7:00 pm, you will lost weight - guaranteed. Not only that, you'll feel better all day long, because your blood sugar will be more stable throughout the day.

Read my previous post as well as my first post again to find out why I am doing this. This is a fasting/detox program that my brother(doctor) determined would be best for my body.

i could just be a logical engineer with no concept of the real world, but i've always lived with the 'black box' theory.the amount going into the box (meals) must be less than the amount going out (exercise) for the box to get smaller. If it isn't....you won't.fasting is drastically reducing the 'in' arrow but is it wise to swing the pendulum that far? I'm not sure.good luck in any case...

Good for you! Yes, before starting any diet, you should detox the several pounds of stuff we all have in our systems...regardless of age. We have used the herbal detox capsules from health stores. We know how colon health is very important-my dad died from colon cancer. I've never fasted before; I've only done the slim fast thing. I also don't drink anything carbonated.
I could never fast. I love food too much. I had lost 25 pounds about 2 years ago, but sadly its all back plus another 5. I stopped going to the gym as frequently. I'm trying to get back on that routine and slowly change what I eat - but darn I love pasta!! And Cheese!

I love food too much also but if I'm going to start eating healthier I had to do this to get me going. I will still indulge on my favorites every so often but my main diet will soon be much healthier overall and I must start exercising when the doc says I am good to go.

actually, that's an old article...i'm trying to find one that's more up to date...turns out it was the fault of Bolthouse. They were discussing it on the radio last week and when i read your earlier post a rung a bell.I'll see what i can find.(2 people being paralyzed should constitute a warning of some kind don't you think?)

If it is the fault of the company, then yeah! Glad, I am not drinking their carrot juice. They recalled it all at the time but, I'll let you know if I get bochelism. Your link is dead now, BTW. It must have gotten bochelism as well.

Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »Did your bother (the dr) mention Diabetes insipidus and how protein will impact your kidneys? But I guess that goes with you measuring your ketone levels several times a day. Fasting is not recommended from what I know. He did talk about how high protein diets affect the kidneys. I am actually taking in less protein than the recommended daily allowance, just enough so there is no muscle breakdown and he said the amount he is requiring me to have will not cause any issues. Ketones are measured several times a day. He said that water only fasts are not recomended, but that when done properly with protein drinks and pure fruit juices for a certain period of time will help cleanse the body in a healthy way.

Here is his practice philosophy:"Our approach is to provide targeted natural healthcare, and to identify the primary imbalances within your body. For example, a person may have many organ systems that are under stress and out of balance, but by identifying and balancing the primary (most significant) organ imbalance it will have the effect of correcting several secondary issues at the same time without additional effort."

I had a colonoscopy (sp) earlier this year and couldn't eat for 36 hours before hand, liquids only the day before and NOTHING, not even water from midnight on .. which is why I had it done first thing in the morning. I found the first 12 hours of fasting the hardest to get through and after that I noticed I wasn't as hungry as I thought I'd be. Even after the procedure I was not all that hungry although I was very thirsty. I forced myself to eat a small meal at lunch and another small meal at dinner because I didn't want to shock my system with an overload.the results were good, just as a precaution because I was 49 and had a family history of colon cancer. Other wise I'm in great shape for a guy knocking on 50, doc told the intern I would be in good shape if I was 29. hehehe, yeah right, thanks anyway doc... maybe he meant 129. LOL

Vibebob, you know you did the best thing for you and your family! My dad was the kind of guy who NEVER went to the doctor. When he starting having pain, it was already too late. And at the age he was (79) they do not do treatment. When I turn 40, I will go to the doctor to get one done too. I've talked to others who've had it done and they say they're glad they did it for their families.
Started another healthy fast today. This one will be 11 days. Same as the last one. Lots of water, fruit juice in the am, protein drink in the Afternoon and veggie juice in the evening. Using all fresh fruits/Veggies and our Juiceman juicer.
