Vibe Engine DIED today 7/13/07

Post by JesseWHHS »

Friday the 13th..... yeah. haha. What luck. It had a slight knock for about 3 weeks. 2 weeks it was in the shop. For the last week, I put about 970 miles on it. Today it decided it was DONE. haha.they couldnt find the problem when it was just a slight knock. But now everyone is saying getting a used motor is the CHEAPEST and SMARTEST route. My dad knows some people. So maybe I can get it done for $1500 out the door.IT doesnt matter to much right now though, I have NO money. Waiting on a new job with GEICO insurance. $13 an hour... heck yeah for me. haha.

its all about this upcoming job. If I get it, Imma have to drive my dad's '89 El Camino SS to work. Its about a 25 mile drive, 50 round trip. So thats 200 miles a week with JUST work. thats 15 - 20 gallons of gas, depending on how I drive. lol. Its expensive to drive. But I guess if I bring home over $400 a week, it wont matter to much. Thanks though I think my plan is to get it running, then sell it. haha. Then move on to a nicer car. I'm REALLY feeling the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions. haha. Thats the only 4 banger I would want to drive. lol

It'll suck worse driving the Camino 200mi a week, i do ~500mi a week on my suabru and it's got just a 2.5L... I'm guessing you are younger, so the EVO would be a great idea, as long as you know you'll be working to pay for the car, gas and insurance, not to mention when it breaks (and it will break). Great cars, but i would double think the choise... Cheers, hope it all works out for ya man..

I am going to agree with sublimewind here. I drive 500+ miles a week for work and then maybe 300 for personal if I go to my hometown. If I had anything that got less mpg than the vibe I would be paying a ton of my paycheck on gas. I drove my dads escape for a week and WOW getting half the mpg sucks soooo bad I had to fill up twice as much. I figure the vibe is a great car for my constant driving and cheap fill ups. the knocking should of been checked asap as that can lead to well as you found out engine failure. What gets me is they couldnt find a problem... but what you need to do is figure out the best cost effective way to get back on the road. Sorry about the engine sucks to not have a car, ive been without mine for 3 weeks, so I know how that is.

a guy found me a motor for $1200. and itll be $50 per hour to install it. about 6 - 8 hours labor on that. Its a 2005 motor with 8,000 miles. Wonder how long that one will last me. haha. I say by 25,000 if I keep it that long. haha. I went to the Pontiac dealership and a crate motor for my car would be $5350.00. a little more than I wanna spend. haha. But he told me a motor from an 05 would fit mine, so the trip was actually worth it. lol

a little over 63,000 miles. I know its VERY sad. ANy thing I can do to make Pontiac pay some of my cost? lolI was hard as hell on it though. haha. I got it at 56,000 miles. I floored it everywhere I went, I would make it down shift all the time, just so it would be a little more fun. haha. But I went with another option I got today. a 2006 motor pulled from a corolla, 7,000 miles on this one. I don't know the details yet, but its a lifetime warranty on parts and labor....Gonna cost $2700 plus labor. I will get out right at $4,000 I think. Along with that, imma go ahead and buy a new battery, my optima is crapping out on me I think, gonna have it tested first. I think I will go ahead and spend a couple hundred and get some lowering springs too.He said he will have to use my old manifolds or sumthin, cause its different on the corolla. But I should see the Vibe back here in about a week. It got towed away today. lol

$4000..... it better damn work out for me. haha. I'm putting it all on a credit card, and gonna pay $400 a month on it. Or thats my plan anyways. haha. In 11 months.... the motor will be paid off. lol. So instead of a $200 car payment, its more like $600.

So it really want the crappy motor, but the lose nut behind the wheels that killed it in under 15000mi? Oh well, the joys of being young... What i don't get is, you admit to ragging the snot out of the car, and yet you still think it's some how Pontiacs partial responsibility...

I'm 18, this was my very first car. I knew it wasn't in the cars best interest to drive it hard all the time... But I had no idea it would kill it.I paid $13,000 out the door for my car. well I still owe $9000 or so, but still. I didn't think I would have to worry about killing a motor. haha.I have learned now though. Plus the new motor im getting has some kind of warranty.... So if it happens again, my mechanic says it is covered. Of coarse I will get some documentation before I start to drive this one hard. Also a question. Will driving the car with a much newer motor with less miles make it a huge difference in performance and such?

It will not big a difference if you had more the 50k on the old engine it will be a little more like 5-10hp make sure you reset the ecu and drove it soft for the first couple 1000 miles to break in the new engine and so the ecu can get used to it

Change the oil after a few hundred miles. You don't know how long the motor's been sitting. The guy before you may have neglected oil changes on the original motor etc. It's hard to break em that early with an auto. I'd be more worried about the tranny with that type of use. Make sure that you change that fluid often with the right stuff.

i just changed the tranny fluid actually. less than a month ago. I didnt flush it, I did the drain and refill thing. I read it on the forums somewhere that a flush may be bad for the tranny.

It depends on how it's done. What you did is great but you only changed less than 1/2 the fluid. you should do that every 10k or so(maybe once more now if that fluid was old to get a good start on things) or 3 consecutive drain and fills with a drive in between every 20k if you beat on it. Check level while hot running.

yeah, I've read it only changes like 33% of the fluid. I do plan to do this every 10k miles. I can tell the difference already with just the little bit of fluid I had changed. My mechanic didn't get the Toyota stuff, but it was fully synthetic and red like the Toyota stuff. He assured me it would be fine. I warned about how the Toyota stuff was proprietary. Its call AMSOIL, on the back it says it recommended for applications requiring.... and Toyota Type T and T-IV is on the back.

It's probably fine but I think synth is kind of waste. The fluid gets so dirty from pad wear etc. that changing it while a standard fluid is still in good shape is fine. Might be better, might not. As long as it meets spec, your fine.

Like any motor it will get stronger as it breaks in. If your gonna drive this one hard wait till you get her broke in. 'Driving hard' still wouldn't explain that motor dying that soon...I drove my Vibe hard all the time and ate up a tranny when I wanted to see how stout it was (dumb move but hell it got covered under warranty) and never had any problems with the vibe other than the tranny. I had 46k miles iirc at the time of my accident. When you said you were constantly downshifting for more fun...were you always bouncing off the rev limiter? Tis what it sounds like.

when i say down shifting, i mean I press the gas in about half way at slower speeds and it down shifts. or when im goin faster, i mash it all the way down, and the it downshifts. Its an auto tranny, so it wouldnt let me mess it up too badly..... or so i thought.

I got my car back last night when I got off of work. I drove it around some last night as well as to work today. I'm SOOO happy to have it back. I can in fact feel a little more power with it now. For now im not driving it like I use to.... but I will probably going back to my old ways eventually. Now that I have that part worked out, I plan to lower the Vibe soon. Got a deal on some Ksport coilovers, rear sway bar, and a front strut brace.
