so i have been having problems with my shoulder for about the last 2 months but being my stubborn self I refused to believe something was wrong and continued to do strenuous exercise with it. Well i finally went and saw a ortho doc yesterday and he said that i have partially torn my rotator cuff, but since he's leaving he doesn't want to do surgery, so the new ortho doc that's coming has to make that decision once they get here. More waiting games. Also he gave me a medicine called voltaren to replace the 800mg motrins i was taking. has anyone heard of/used this stuff? does it work well??

Volarian, yeah, isn't that the stuff you get at the helthfood store? Like a root of something something..??No, but seriously, that sux man, i've never torn a rotator cuff, but i SURE SHOULD HAVE. I went over my handlebars on my bike once at the skatepark. Dislocated/broke 2 ribs, should have broken my collor bone, but didn't for some reasion, and definitly farked my rotator cuff, but it must not have torn, just brused... I guess i got lucky... Hope it all works out for ya man, i know how that pain can be... Cheers

I have had my right labrum (rotator cuff) surgically repaired. It's about 6 months in a sling worst case (3 months best case). Then another 6 months of PT...the surgery itself is not very invasive at all, but it puts you out for up to a year...

Voltarn is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) and is very much similar to Motrin/Naprosyn/Orudis, etc. It has an enteric coating so it is a little easier on the stomach but I would still take it with food. Since it is coated it will take longer to work than the Motrin did, so you may want to take it on a fairly regular schedule (I don't know if the doc prescribed the XR tablets which are usually taken once a day). If you still get some g.i. upset you can take it with OTC Pepcid (my favorite) or Zantac. However, you shouldn't drink a lot while on this drug or you may develop a nice ulcer.Hope this helps.Mike

It has been on the market for at least 30 years but is not one of the most popular NSAIDs so you probably don't hear much about it. Most of the docs I've dealt with start with Motrin or Naprosyn and then go to some of the others like Relafen, Indocin, Clinoril, and then those infamous COX-2 inhibitors such as Celebrex, Vioxx, Bextra (of which Vioxx and Bextra have been removed from the market)Voltaren seems to work as well as other non-steroidals but not much advantage to it than over the others.Mike
