Ram Air

Post by Stealth_Vibe »

question on ram airif you want to have a ram air hood do you have to have a short ram air intake or a CAI.if you just have the hood does it do anything by its self.

It doesn't really matter what type of intake you have as long as the ram air hood is sealed (when closed) to whatever type (including stock) of intake you have. That's the trick, sealing the hood to the intake.

The ram air hood does nothing but look good by itself. If left open it will cool the engine bay a little. If hooked up to the intake it brings in cooler outside air for a small horsepower gain. If you are going 100mph+ then the ram air effect will begin to produce additional HP.

The two ram air hoods I have seen route the ram air vents to the top of what would be the stock air box. If you had a SRI there then yes it would route the air to that air filter. As for noticable increase in performance...not sure, but it would bring some cooler air to the filter and engine bay.

The bottom line is, if you can't seal the air scoops to the intake, you have nothing more than CAI. By sealing the scoop(s) to the intake, a slight air pressure increase will occur inside the intake as vehicle speed increases. If the scoop(s) are not sealed to the intake, then under the hood is being filled with cooler air, which is better than nothing, but it ain't ram air.

oh yeah, most the ram air stock hoods have that rubber seal around the air box part...which could be do-able with the stock vibe air box and the ram air hood.

If the factory air box is used, the scoop(s) must be plumbed into the bottom half of the box for air filtration.

Yep, that sounds like SLP is doing it right. Like I said, if the scoop(s) are sealed to the intake, you have both ram air and cold air - no seal, cold air only.

That's not ram air, it's zoomie exhaust. Hope there's a fire extinguisher close by.
