Nevermind, I found it:http://www.genvibe.com/html/03guide/vibeguide3.shtml.. 3rd paragraph.Driving Pattern Selector.. either a technical term for something I am not aware of, or this article was based on very early Vibe data. My guess is the latter.
I think you're right, Nick. Seems like an erroneous statement to me. At first I thought that it might be a logic program for the transmission were a computer can sense throttle demand patterns and soften or firm up shifts. But what this sounds like is a swich mounted on or near the shifter like the Saturns had where you could choose between normal and performance modes. Maybe the Vibe was supposed to get this and it got nixed just prior to production?

"The automatic shifter has a high-quality design with an overdrive switch and driving pattern selector."Sounds to me like they're just talking about the shifter itself... I'm thinking "shift pattern" is simply the arrangement of the gears on the shifter. PRND2L. At least that's how I interpret the statement. I think they were trying to be far too techinical that it ended up causing a little distortion about what they were actually referring to.

On the shift lever below the obvious large chrome button there is a small black button labeled O/D. When pressed, there is a display in the instrument cluster "OD OFF". In the OD OFF mode, the transmission controller will allow the engine to rev much higher before shifting and thus allow the engine to make more power and accelerate better. Thus, it works much the same way as other vehicles that have a "performance mode". It's very useful for city driving and trailering.

Turning overdrive off only means that the trans won't shift into 4th gear. Basically acting like a 3-speed auto. Acceleration performance is not effected because it still useds the same first 3 gears.
i may not know what im talking about here but if you look at some of the pics of matrixes over on the left where the rear window popopen button is the another button that says "ect" im thinking that electronically controled transmision or something like that. my aunt had it on her pathfinder, the manual "said it was to help acceleration". does anyone with a vibe have this button. i have a similar feature in my vibe its called "right hand, left foot".
look my sniggies, i had a strizz-oke in my brizz-ain okay, you know what im saying. so i cant move all good. but thanks for mentioning that .thank you very much.athf4evr. click here! you know you want to!!!
Why don't you take one out for a drive yourself and make notes on the rpm shift points for 2nd and 3rd as well as the shift kick downs. After you make the observation then you will understand what a shift pattern is.

My experience so far with the Base Vibe's auto tranny is that the shift points change depending on how hard you are trying to accelerate. For example: When I'm not in any hurry and accelerate with light pedal pressure, the auto will shift quickly into successive gears. When I'm "stepping on it", the auto will stay in each gear longer, allowing the engine to get into it's higher RPM/better torque range. I'm guessing the tranny's progamming is designed to shift gears based on engine load, not specific speed. Thus there is no need to have a switch for economy/sport, since you can get better economy by pressing lightly on the gas pedal to accelerate slowly, and a sportier degree of performance by pressing harder. That's probably why I'm getting no better than 25mpg for my city driving, since I tend to accelerate from each stoplight or stop sign as fast as the little Vibe will take me.
