I'm looking at buying a 05 that has an issue (prior salvage). The car had the engine replaced (drive by wire) due to an accident that broke the AC mount. The car will shift and drive fine in 1st and 2nd gear, but will not shift into 3rd or 4th gear. It also requires additional gas to get it to move in reverse. It has MIL codes but I don't have them yet.Any thoughts on what could be going on (I assume electric)? Is this a limp home feature on the transmission? Anything to check?
is there any reason you want to buy a salvaged title car? with tranny issues and such it may cost more to get that running reliably than buying a working used one, in the long run.
I've bought prior salvage cars in the past and if priced right they are a good deal. I can get this one with <20K miles for 5800$. So of course it could be something worth driving into the ground.....if the tranny issue is something someone might be familiar with.
There are a number of tranny related CELS, It is an electronically control tranny, so it could be an inexpensive electrical fix, but then again it oculd be something deeper. In considering the purchase, I'd say factor in if it would still be a good deal if you have to replace the transmission. Attached a pdf of 2004 1ZZ CEL codes, the tranny ones are towards the end.
In CT you cannot purchase or even create a salvage car. The titles are not valid. When I worked for Acura we had a kid from Mass or NY or somewhere come in with a S2000. Nice looking car came in that rare dark grey with red leather interior combination. Problem was he tried to play it off that it was a clean title until we searched and he confessed it was rebuilt by his uncle as a salvage in some other state. Hence he was not able to get it transferred to a CT registration. Well long story short he wanted $19,000 for this thing, and it was blue booked at its highest value for a salvage at $4,000. Cause we could not resell the car, it would have to go to an auction or something. LOL he drove off mad thinking he could still get that kind of cash for it.
Could be a shift solenoid, I had several of those burn up (it wouldn't shift out of first.) When they tore my transmission apart, there wasn't anything in there that could be salvaged, the only thing they could do was replace the thing. Hopefully yours isn't that bad off.

Only 1 MIL codeP0500 vehicle speed sensor. So I went and drove it.....no speedometer, could this lack of a speed sensor/signal cause the transmission to not shift above second gear? It shifts out of 1st gear pretty much as soon as its moving.
the logic of the tranny control isn't well documented. Possible, but hard to say. Hopefuly the fix is as easy as hooking up the connector to the VSS sensor on the tranny
