Two sets of tires

Post by ~MRVIBE2006~ »

Hey there. I was considering going the 2 tire set. You know, one set for summer and one set for winter. As I still live in central IN and still get a good amount of snow, I was considering this. I have already picked the winter tires (Bridgestone Blizzaks on the OEM 16" alloy rims) and a set of 17" tires on aftermarket rims (I've narrowed that choice to 3 tires and one set of rims). Is this a good idea? Especially if one has the money to do it. Ley me know what yous think!

There are several people that are doing this...I myself will be picking up a set of Kosei K1TS 18x7.5 and wrapping them with some Kuhmo Extas for the summer and then replacing the potenzas i have on my stock 16" alloys for some Blizzaks for the winter.

Found a set of the 17" Toyota Tc rims on eBay. Plus I was looking at some Generals, Exclaim UHP 235/45/17. Any opinions?

Here's the Toyota Tc rims. I think they would look good on an Abyss vibe. Opinions?

Stay away from the Generals if your looking for "real" performance. Is the performance what it is you are looking for?? If so, look toward the Kumho SPT for a decently cheap option that will perform great... I've owned a few sets of Kumho tires and have nothing but good to say about them... Some of the best tires i've owned and they don't break the bank... I've done MUCH research on tires lately as well.... Then you could consider the Falken 452 for something a little more expensive but higher performance options...Going with summers and winters is an EXCELLENT move man, you have your cake AND eat it to..!! Blizzaks are GREAT tires as long as you keep them on snow, dry pavement chews them up REAL quick as the "performance" portion if the tread is only about 3/16" thick (they use a super high density closed cell FOAM for the start of the tread, once that wears away, you have a "decent" snow tire left, but till then WOH they rock) They are REALLY mushy to..... at least the WS-50 is... but in a 16" size it might not be that bad... Those Tc rims will look HOT to... If you want a forum that is set on the pulse of tire technology stop in over at my Subaru boards Wheel&tire section and do some looking... we're over 100k members strong over there and the amount of info if boggleing... http://forums.nasioc.com/forum...?f=88

also, make sure you check the tire calculator to make sure you have the correct size if you are going to 17's.as for 2 sets of tires, hey... we ALWAYS have 2 sets, and maybe picking up some slicks for autox/track season for each of the cars... and to think we finally got rid of 3 sets of rims! LOL.

225/45/17 would be the correct size. 235's may even be too wide for those rims. The General UHP is top rated on Tirerack.com and have a AA traction A temperature rating which is excellent and they are cheap. I will be buying them next or Nitto Neogen

After reading the posts here, I will prolly go with the Kumho SPT.But do you think that the 235/45/17 would be too big? Should I step down a size to 225/45/17?

I think the SPT would be a great choise, as it was my recomendation...lolI personaly don't see ANY need for you to go from 225/45 to 235/45 as you change your width by a WHOLE 10mm... 1cm Woh stand back now.... lol JK..!Seriously, what's the cost difference between the two? I would stick with the 225, the 235 will increase nothing but price for you.... Now if you were going to go 255, that would be different.... but... let the price difference guide you on this one man... the ends won't justify the means....

Ok, underestandable. Then could I go to a 225/ 50/ 17? Or would that be too tall?

For a slight increase in price, you can get Yokohama AVS ES100's, some of the most highest rated summer performance tires, they've been around for awhile.

The Tc rims are on their way! Now just gonna have to decide about the tires. I am really leaning towards the Kumho SPT. I like the looks and all the reviews I have read have been great! Now the size: 225/45 or 235/45? Will definately post pics when I get them on!

I will be getting the tires locally so I will check the price vs size difference there. Yes, the Tc rims are 7" wide. Would the 225 fit better than the 235?

Cool, but are you sure about getting them local? DTD has free shipping and you get the option to buy the road hazard warentee, anything goes wrong and they replace it... done... it was like 10 something a tire on my last set i got a month ago... they may be running discounts on certain tires as well... At least compare local to internet... As far as width, as you put a wider tire on a rim not ment for it, the tire "crowns" or bulges along the center rib, causing unpredictable handling and darting on crowned pavement, more so than normal and they wear funny, like there overinflated but they may not be... Some of the Subaru drifters and time attack racers can use this to an advantage buy having another way of tuning handling... but on the street, it's just not practical

I can get the Kumho SPT 235/45/17 locally mounted, balanced, valve stems, and lifetime rotation for $111.00 per tire, plus tax. The 225 might be slightly cheaper, would have to check on that.

I would recommend going with the 225s.If you go Discount Tire, they will match the tirerack.com price excluding the shipping, so you have potential to save more money going that route.

Just found out from my local Tire Barn that I can get 4 take-offs (less than 50 miles driven) Toyos P4 for $269.00 plus tax (mounting, balancing, and lifetime rotation plus original warranty) size 235/45/17. Tires still have the yellow line visible in them from when they were new. Is this a good deal or should I steer clear of them?Let me know!

What would you be planning for them? Winter driving? If so i wouldn't.... i'm a hardcore winter tire lover though, so anything but winter tires for winter you'll be hard pressed getting me to agree with it... That IS a great price no matter HOW you look at it though...

Those would be my summer tires. I would look for something else for the winter and would probably put those winter tires on my OEM alloys.
