muffler options

Post by hank the tank »

I am doing a header back exhaust system soon and can't figure out what kind of muffler to use. I don't want a tuner sound. I was thinking a Borla muffler. Dose any have a good know how of mufflers.

what do you mean by tuner sound? a lot of people seem pretty happy who got the borla.

Hank, is this the sound you are looking for?If so, I used a Flowmaster Type Muffler.

Unfortunately, you won't be able to avoid the "tuner" sound. That's the nature of having a huge 1.8 liters of fury under your hood. However, you can avoid the buzzy sound you often hear from civics. Borla or Magnaflow are both safe choices. I am partial to borla, as that is the kind of muffler I'm using. I don't remember exactly what muffler it is, but it is larger than the one offered in the Borla axle-back exhaust for the GT. In addition to that, I also have my resonator removed. This is only temporary, as I am getting a 2 1/2 inch header back exhaust made in anticipation of a supercharger, which I plan to purchase in the near future. However, my current setup produces a pleasant tone, mellow and consistent through all rpm's.

The sound I don't want is a high sharp sound like the honda's. I am looking for a deep rumble at low rpm and a mild sharp sound under load.I am doing a custom 3" pipe from the header And getting rid of the cat.

Do you have f/i? Even so, 3" might be too large for the vibe. I know that I will be losing low end tourque with 2.5", but I'll be supercharging eventually, so it'll be perfect then.

If a 3" being to large would keeping the stock pipe in place and changing the muffler and lossing the cat would keep the low end tourque? I alos have a DC sport header comming.

The most you will want to go it 2.5" without being F/I.

Thanks! The only problem I had with it, was it got to be too loud for me inside the car(too much resonance). So, I replaced the 24" resonator with a Flowmaster Hushpower II Muffler. So now I am running a 2 muffler set-up. Much quieter inside and still the same great sound outside at idle and during acceleration. I'll have to get some new vid/sound clips and update that thread.

people can say what they want about f/i but even then, i doubt a vibe would need 3" exhaust. perhaps if it were in the 300hp range, but not 180 or even 200. much damn air does it really take to make that much HP?

A Vibe "doesn't" need even a 2.25" exhaust, there simply isn't enough flow I have a Borla universal on my Subaru, sounds GREAT...BUT.... it's a straight through design that would be likely to long to get to fit... Can anyone tell me the leingth of the "fart can" style mufflers i see advertised for the vibe?? I want to say my Borla is 24-28" long from inlet flange to the end of the tips... Reference shot, on my dirty girl.....

It's a Super Turbo. Don't quote me on it but it's 2" in and out, or whatever the factory pipe size is. And I believe it's 14" long.
