Center console compartment - spring loaded "button" or not?

Post by scoot »

I'm sure a lot of you are familiar with the issue with the center compartment falling down all the time. I had the same issue on my 03 Vibe so I took it out of the car myself because I didn't need it anyways. My mom recently took the car into the GM dealership to have an oil change on it and have things looked at. She decided to have them order a new center console compartment for it.I got the compartment and tried to put it in, but it doesn't stay in place! (always pops out after I put it up) I did notice that it's a bit different from the original one: this one seems to have a spring-loaded "button" when the original one didn't. What might be going on here? Is this a newer revision of the same part? Or might it be the wrong part (for another model year or something)?Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There is a fix for that. There are a few posts on that subject here.I think there is a difference between years.I some what remember a piece of felt to keep the latch tight, was tried a few times.

http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=25576 has some info and links to other threads about the problem, and indicates that the latch was redesigned in the 05+on mine the problem is that when I hit the release button, it doesn't open, I have to hold the release button and hook a fingernail in the seam to pull it open, so I tend to not use it much.

also, the lower console itself has to be replaced to use the newer design in older cars. We tried to modify it on my '03, but in the end had to get the lower console.

I have this same problem with my '03. I discovered that the console itself is warped, causing the latch not to catch well. Hit a bump, and it falls open. I haven't read the other threads yet, but it's likely that someone else has seen this. In fact, the silver trim piece on mine pops up because of the warping. Unfortunately, I'm out of warranty, and to replace the console is a bit pricey. So, I took the latch and button out and replaced it with a double-stick velcro. It works, but when it gets really hot, the adhesive melts and it falls open again!
