Installing a sun shade - how should I drill/nail?

Post by GoLowDrew »

I will be installing two sun shade 6'X6' on the patio. Not sure exactly how heavy they are but I'm going to say 30lbs each (does that sound right?). There are only two rings on the sun shade to mount. So I will need to use two hooks/nails for each shade. The wood post where I will mount them is about 3" wide.Which direction should I nail that will offer the most strength?Red or Blue?

I would not use nails, they may come loose (gradually) due to wind. Go to a hardware store and ask for galvanized lag screws. I would use a screw at least 3 inches long with a washer on each. The direction that offer the most strength is horizontal or the red nail in you illustration. Lag screws are much stronger than you need, but the nails wouldn't be strong enough. Post a pic when you get them installed. Good Luck.

One more question:Natural "Wood" or PVC plastic? The natural is about $20+ difference, and looks like some kind of bamboo material. The "string" part is the same.Which will weather better or last longer?

PVC will tolerate the weather better and last longer. wood is stronger, but will not resist the weather as well. I have seen bamboo last a long time though. You live in Arizona, so cold shouldn't be a factor. I think you could safely get whatever you feel looks better.

I got confused when I failed to notice this was in the Off topic section, took me a while to jack up the nerve to read it, thinking somebody was seriously considering nailing a sunscreen into their vibe. I don't understand the diagram.

The diagram is the underside of his roof edge. He was asking which direction to drive the screws to install a sun shade.

I don't understand the diagram. That was my first reaction, too. I was thinking of the sunscreens that they used to put on the 50's cars.

I have no clue, it looked to me to be a logo or sig. I think the post he's refering to is the fascia below the roof edge, but he'll have to confirm that.

I host the pic there so I can post it. Since I used their site, they put the logo on all pics.Maybe I shouldn't have to reduce confusion. Sorry.

ok, I thought it was part of the diagram. Couldn't figure out what part of the sun shade it was.
