A few months ago I took advantage of a dealer 10 for $10 special that included a tire rotation, battery test and eight other "inspections". I was in and out in a half hour so they didn't spend that awful much time. Battery is 4 years old - they didn't say it needed replacement. Tires were reported to be 10/32nds tread depth. The brake report was "8/32nds" left on the front pads, "5/32nds"on the rear shoes. I responded to their follow-up e-mail asking what those numbers meant. No response. Asked again - got a call this a.m. saying that new pads are 10/32nds, and new shoes are 6/32nds so the pads and shoes are wearing very well for 24,000 miles. Hard to believe.Now this is the dealer service dept that noted on my 22,103 mile oil change receipt that "we have measured your tires and found that the lowest remaining tead depth is 3/32. This condition requires immediate attention". These tires were new at 19,328 miles. And these sames tires were at 10/32nds at the above 24,000 mile inspection. Self healing tires - what a great invention.

Self healing tires - what a great invention.sounds shady... walmart has thing in their tire dept that you set in the groove and it tells you exactly how much tread you have left... good tool for people who dont know much and could get bent over by a dealer..

Probably had the wrong car. Some other guy is probably driving around fat and happy thinking HIS tires are a-ok. Actually I think the end of life on tire tread is 2/32nds not 3/32nds - though I would probably replace at 3/32nds.

well some tech eyeball things... based on their experience, they can tell if your pads are new, or roughly what % worn out. Same with tires.Now if your car goes to someone else, you might end up with slightly different estimates. Just make sure they actually measure instead of eye balling it.

No way to know - but at my driving rate of 500 miles a month I know I can put off any concern about this until next summer.

Many tires have "wear bars" in the channels on the tire, these are usually a good indicator of wear.... Just about anything tires can be found here... http://www.tirerack.com/tires/...id=38Enjoy..!!
