What Oil & filter do YOU use?

Post by truckdriver402 »

Hi all,I'm new to the Vibe and new to this forum. I'm surious as to what kind of oil and oil filter you use. Since I was in high school, I've ALWAYS used Pure One oil filters. I also own a 1991 Geo Storm with 196k on it (which I attribute to my oil, filter, and good ol' Japanese engineering!).The manual says to use 5w-30. However, I have always heard that when you get some miles on a car, you should bump up to 10w-30. Do let me know!

I also use the Purolater long life one by pureone for a filter. For oil its usually the plain valve 1 or mobile 5w-30.

K&N Filter with 10W-30 which I know is ok to use as long as you're not in really cold weather.

Even if 0W-30 or 5W-30 had better flow characteristics than 10W-30 at 75F? All 3 have the same viscosity at 212F.

I am using Mobile 1 Full Synthetic 5w30, and a Purolator PureOne #PL14477 filter. I think you're better off staying with what is recommended since it was designed for that weight oil.

This might change your mind about going to 10W. Most of your wear occurs when the engine is at less than operating temp. 0W-30, 5W-30 and 10W-30 are the same thickness at normal operating temps but the 0W and 5W oils will start the lubrication process quicker at below normal operating temps than 10W will because they flow better at lower temps.http://63.240.161.99/motoroil/

K&N HP-1002 and Royal Purple 5w30. Used to use Red Line 5w30 but it's very difficult to find w/o having to order online. The K&N Filters have a 1" nut molded into the end so all you need to remove it is a 1" socket. Very convenient.Dave

5w-30 with a phram filter. I also used the Purolator PureOne filter when the phram is not in stock.

At 212F 0W-30 is just as thick as straight 30 weight so you don't have to worry about having too thin an oil in your Arizona heat.If and when 0W-XX dino oil is introduced, you can bet the auto manufacturers will recommend it because it flows quicker than 5W-XX and especially 10W-XX at less than normal engine operating temps. Currently 0W-XX is only available in synthetic so most manufacturers aren't going to require the use of synthetic oil but it does provide superior flow characteristics at less than normal operating temps.

If I lived in a warm climate I'd run synthetic. In MN with synthetic it takes a lot longer for the engine to warm up as there isnt as much friction so on those cold winter mornings it sucks to drive twice as far without heat than with the dyno oil stuff.

Hummmm, I believe most of the heat generated is from the combustion process, not friction. When it's extremely cold, it'll take any engine, regardless of what oil, longer to reach operating temp. The main advantages of synthetic vs dino is its ability to flow at low temps and it's ability to resist breakdown at extreme high temps, 300F plus. There is very little difference in friction reduction between the two, a lot less friction is a myth.

I don't remember the part number off the top of my head, but I don't think I'd call it long. Is there more than one size filter? I have the base engine.

I think the Purolator PureOne PL14477 is their oil filter spec'd for the GT/2ZZ engine, and it will fit a Base/1ZZ, but is a little bit longer, so it holds a bit more oil, and also should have more filter elements inside, theoretically providing better flow, less resistance to impeded flow from the filter elements becoming restricted by filtered particles.I have a base, and use the PL14476, and castrol GTX 5W-30

Exactly what joat said. The 77 is slightly longer than the 76. The 77 and 76 will fit either engine.

Does anyone know if the Matrix/Corolla now use 5w20? I thought when they did their engineering trick w/a bigger sump via a shorter dipstick, they began pushing 5w20. Oh, and as others have said, the 2ZZ filters not only offer more filter/filtration, they offer you a nice 4qt oil change. I use the longer OEM one...I bought a case off Ebay from Rusty Wallace Toyota for $29.

I didn't realize so many people used Pure One! I've tried to turn as many on to it as I can. As for me, I use Valvoline Max Life 5w-30 with a Pure One filter PL14476.

My 1991 Geo Storm still runs great and still doesn't use a drop of oil or smoke. I have about 196,000 miles on it. Problem is, it won't pass PA inspection as the struts are shot...I should've kept an Ohio tag on it!
