Fun with MAFS

Post by manicdan »

ok i had bough a weapon R air intake for my last car, and i went the cheap way of installing it into my vibe. i bought a 40$ kit of ebay and basically swaped the filters around, worked well cept no instructions. but a few days ago i found out the metal beam that goes between the mounting screw and the intake pipe (sorry for laymans terms) broke and the intake was only being held on by the rubber clamps between the pipe and intake manifold. so it would shake around a bit. just enough to also make the mass air flow sensor go all screwy and act like its air tight in there and decide not to put any gas in my engine. so it stalled my engine at any speed bump, train track, sharp turns, hard breaking, even shifting sometimes caused enough movement to stop its functioning. so i have it being held down in a very stupid way for the mean time until a real weapon r kit comes in, so ill have a backup filter and a much nicer setup hopefullyso my question is, why the hell did they make that air flow sensor so damn sensitive, its even shaped all weird. is it possible to replace that sensor with one that dosnt take up as much room in the pipe or act up so easily?

The ebay intakes use thin aluminum. That's why it's better to spend more money on a better quality unit. The maf sensor is sensitive,so I could see how that could have happened.

I somehow fried my MAF when I installed my intake. Maybe I dropped it or something I don't know. Yeah they are pretty easy to mess up if not secure.

the MAF sensor is mostly encased in plastic, so I personally doubt that vibration would have that much effect on it.My guess, the battery was hooked up when the MAF was unplugged and it blew, or,...and I’m willing to bet this is more likely the case, the air filter was over oiled (using rechargeable K&N?)I used a K&N designed for a caterpillar (bigger and more flow) and it was throwing SES lights every 2 weeks until this last winter when the wheel well plastic was worn out on the tire (and thus removed) and the forced air pressure in the wheel well dropped to atmosphere (no forced air pressure under drive).

In any case all the times I have swapped that CAI in and out, I plugged in the MAF last and never blew it since.

if u guys wanna see how sensitive they are just unscrew the mounting brackets for your intake, turn the engine on and shake the intake yourself, it will stall, its how i tested the problem and found out why my engine stalled in the first place.

There is no reason to disconnect your battery before removing the MAF. But, you do need to unplug the MAF before unscrewing it. This is probably why so many people blow there MAF. And if a filter is pre-oiled it will be colored from the oil. If it is pre-oiled, there is no reason to oil it. And when oiling you only need to apply a thin coat of oil, and let it absorb before re-installing. I have no idea why so many people have all these problems. I searched and searched on this subject on this site as well as making many postings only to find that no one really knows that much about anything! Thankfully I work with a person who used to be a mechanic for GM for 10 years to solve all the "myths" here. I'm sure many of you will criticize this but THANKS FOR NOTHING GENVIBE

Since the plug/wires are not all that long anyway, it would be difficult to unscrew without unplugging first. thats my opinion from my many experiences with this.

BLAHAHAHHAHAHHA There is book knowledge and there is street knowledge, if you want to trust your rig to someone who is trained in only what they are told, go for it. I would trust the things printed here over any "GM mechanic for years" any day. Thats like a MCSE stating MS OS's are the best, of course they are, MS makes them a crap ton of money.

Myself I have over 10 years in automotive with 7 years in an actual industry. I've seen some weird stuff in my time so far. But to say that anything we know has no weight against your 10 year GM experienced friend insults us so you get the right response from us.

I am a computer engineer of well over 20 years. I've been participating, hosting, or moderating in egroups since the late 80's and one thing has always remained true.... YOU DONT COME INTO A FORUM AND START SHOUTING AT THE FORUM, THE MODERATORS, OR THE FORUM GODS. You will get flamed for disrespecting those that give up their personal time to maintain the site for everyone. I remember that noobs needed to sit quietly for at least 6 months before they were even allowed to post. You Vibe04, joined in January of this year, and you have the audacity to shout "THANKS FOR NOTHING GENVIBE" ! My question is, who do you think you are? Of course you’re going to get flamed. What are they teaching these kids these days?

And don't forget, with the Toyota ECU's, Blue Crush. Oh yeah, I forgot, I am sure his friend is aware the GT's actually have a 1ZZGE with a Yamaha Head, which in turn gives birth to the 2ZZGE. I am sure he knows all about that.

Yeah Mavrik, professional and personal experience. I only have personal experience. I have been a backyard wrench turner since the age of 15. I just love playing in the engine bay, and I learned everything about an engine block from the many mistakes I've made throughout the decades. I love this place, you actually learn a lot.

You guys are always so technical. Yeah yeah, I know about the pistons, headers, mapping etc., but you would get tired of me after saying all of that stuff. So I kept it simple and decided to let the GM guy figure out the rest of the non-GM block.

I was being serious, as well as a smart behind, but if you want me to provide you with the technical details between the 1zz, 2zz, and Honda blocks, I could, but all of you would not like me because I would end up using all of the sites memory, and all of you would not be able to have discussions with each other on generation vibe anymore.
