5sp transmission -- New? Remanufactured? New *and* remanufactured?

Well, I bought my Vibe only a couple months ago and now the manual transmission is dead. It's an 04, maybe the first 04 to report dead here? It was driven by the previous owner twice a week on a 400 mile highway trip for work. Immaculate maintainence records. 91K+ miles. Depressing considering I felt like I was buying reliable transportation. I read a bunch of the threads regarding this issue and it seems like a common failure. Has anyone had luck with a new one? I read someone found a new *and* remanufactured tranny (as if they located and fixed the problem before the unit was actually used). Is there any more information out there about this? I'm having a hard time settling myself into buying a used one that I know will fail again. I want a 100k warranty! Anyone had luck otherwise? Or luck with a used one?Thanks,-E.

Are you sure its not just the clutch thats gone? I know the clutch in these cars can go quick.Welcome to the site by the way!

Not the clutch, definately the tranny. This is a base 04. It's been diagnosed by a trusted mech. And I heard some awful loud clicking and clunking noises putting the darn thing on the tow truck. Although I'm going to replace the clutch as well.Anyone else offer any help?Thanks,-E.

It should be about half the cost to rebuild the tranny then to buy a new one. And if you rebuild you can get performance parts put in

I think your out of luck on the 100k powertrain warranty. only canadian 04 Vibes got that.remanufactured is probably about as reliable as new and cheaper.

Thanks, joatman.I contacted FLaBarbara and after his easy DIY swap with a used one, he hasn't had any problems since. I did talk to the local dealers, and even tried finding the Pitt, PA dealership that FLa talked about, but I only found the same "new" transmission for the same price, with the same crappy warranty. I guess I'll go ahead with getting a used one in my Vibe and keep my fingers crossed. Unfortunate, because that 100K warranty was sounding really nice, even with the price tag, as I definately don't want this failure happening again.Anyone know what the policy is with recalls? If they finally admit it's a problem, will they compensate owners for old repairs?*hoping mine's still just a fluke*-E.
