http://www.leftlanenews.com/ch...-4842General Motors has confirmed production of its Monte Carlo coupe will end early this summer. The last orders will be taken in early May, and assembly at Canada's Oshawa plant will stop on June 20th.Thanks to a model update and new V8 engine, sales of the front-wheel-drive Monte Carlo were up slightly in 2006, but fell significantly early this year (down 60 percent in January). GM expects the 2008 Malibu to cut into potential Monte Carlo sales further, making now a good time to axe the coupe. While GM hasn't commented on the future of the nameplate, product chief Bob Lutz said in March GM's new rear-wheel-drive Zeta platform would be used for a new Monte Carlo, along with the upcoming Camaro, Impala, GTO, and Buick Statesman (now believed to be on hold). At the time, Lutz also said a new El Camino was possible — a proposal that is gaining steam, according to recent reports.
Nothing to do with the current Monte Carlo, but my first car was a 1985 Monte Carlo bought in 1991 with only 23000 miles on it. It was the stereotypical little old lady car who only drove it to church. That car got me through college (2 degrees over many years) and was still running fairly well towards then end. After I got my first job my father donated it to charity for the tax write-off. I'm still looking around to see if anyone is driving it since I work in the city and it was donated to a city-based organization but so far, no luck. Great car, very few problems over the 10 years I owned her.Mike

Oh well, it is probably the ugliest car in GM's current US lineup. They're nice enough cars (rented one several times), but I prefer the Impala, as far as looks and usability.

It had 285,000 miles and still running strong. It was one of the best cars I've ever owned.

I hate to see the Monte Carlo go (for the second time) but the 2000+ cars weren't quite doing anything for me. They did resemble the old RWD cars, but something wasn't quite right with them. The '95-'99 models weren't too shabby, I always liked those. Mom was one of the first in our crappy small town to buy the Monte when it came back out, so I had a pretty cool car to cruise around in back when I was in high school. That was a good car, she drove that sucker from Oct of '94 up to last summer when she bought another car. The folks gave that car to my uncle, who is now driving it about 100 miles a day. It had a little over 100K on it when they got rid of it, no telling what it's at now. Had a few issues with head gaskets (ahem, 3100?) and the brakes weren't all that strong (they never could get that figured out.) But all in all, that was quite a good car.My first car was an '82 Monte, back in the RWD days. 229 cubic inch V6 with a 2bbl carb that churned out the same 110 HP that my Hyundai Accent does, although the Monte did have like 160 pounds of torque. That car didn't go all that great - huge car and not enough oomph to pull itself around. Sucked in the snow! Hard to park, since it was huge. Not the greatest on gas, maybe 20 MPG. But man, I loved that car. Sure was purdy, white with a dark blue vinyl top (hooray 70s and 80s style!) and a dark blue interior. We rebuilt it after a minor engine fire from a leaky valve cover (read: got to buy it cheap from a friend of dad's and fixed it up for next to nothing) so I had a bit of time invested in it. Got a new paint job on it later down the road, and finally went to trade it in. That was the ONLY time I ever came out ahead on a trade, didn't pay much for it, didn't take much to fix it up, and even did fine factoring in the repaint. ome redneck scumbag bought the car and trashed it. The Monte often comes back in my dreams, quite strange. I often dream that it's sitting around as my second car! I think it's pissed at me for leaving, or maybe I regret getting rid of it!Anyway, another RWD Monte would be welcomed! I hope they choose to go that route, somebody needs to keep the large coupe alive.

Not sad to see it go, thought it was an ugly looking boat (no offence to any current owner) the car is not my taste everytime I see one I think no wonder GM is in trouble.
