Passenger airbag on/off light?

(I'm not sure where this question goes, so I'm sorry if it's in the wrong place)The other day on my way to work, I noticed the passenger airbag light said the passenger airbag was "OFF". But today the word OFF was not lighted up, so I'm assuming the passenger airbag is on. I have no passengers when I go to work except for my doggies, who sit safely in their carriers on the floor. And nobody sat on the passenger seat today either. I'm confused...

Mine only says airbag off when some thing ( like my youngest son) is sitting in the seat. he is under the 80 pounds. If I put something heavier on it Like my wife then it says air bag on it will say airbag off if I put something on it that has some weight to it though. if nothing is on it is stays unlit.
