Newbie question about adapter kits to mount new stereo deck in place of OEM deck

Post by smurfy »

This is a total newbie question. I am the proud owner of a 2004 Vibe with the base Delco stereo. Having been wanting to upgrade to a nicer unit which is IPOD friendly or at least MP3 capable. However, unlike my old-skool Audi 4000 in from the mid-80s, the stereo enclosure isn't the "standard" retangular size? Does anyone know of a good source for the deck kit to modify the enclosure, so that i can install a "standard" size unit? There seems to be a few seller on Ebay that sell these deck kits, but I can't tell if they are just generic units, or if they are customized to the Vibe/Matrix. Alternately, if someone can suggest a SPECIFIC brand or source for such a kit, it would be much appreciated. Also, does the OEM stereo require the VIN for programming? Would this be an issue if I decide to replace with an aftermarket unit? Any suggestions for a good suitable replacement unit would also be much appreciated !

The Metra dash kit is very nice, (Metra PN 99-8205) and has a lot of options. I have one in hand while I wait for warmer weather to do my swap. They run about $20, I got mine from Circuit City, they said it was normally special order, but they had one on the shelf I grabbed. If you have Moon & Tunes.. (amp under the passenger seat and 2 ohm speakers) you may want to read up on the stickies in the forum. And the stock stereo in Vibe's does not use the VIN or access codes, they're not the same as all the other GM products, you're good to go there.Diane
