Probably won't make much of a difference. If you're not throwing a CEL chances are the computer is adjusting for the lean situation. It would be a much different story with a turbocharger, I'm not sure about a supercharger, but since we're naturally aspirated (Faultline not withstanding ), we should be fine.
I would love to see the conversation at the dealer in person when they come back after checking on the aftermarket parts. A CAI won't do much in the long run, but adjusting boost without any engine management or fuel upgrades is stupid. I saw this on my friends Eclipse GSX. Too much boost and not enough gas blew that engine.
quote:I have been wondering, I have been bouncing the idea around of a Injen CAI with that Spach Guard, but I am wondering, is there going to be room or no? Or do what Nova did, cut it short to get some of an effect or just get a K&N. MY concern is because my girlfriend drives the car (more than me lately) and she likes to dirve in puddles, plus I am on a gravel road and it gets bad. So, any ideas from you guys, let me know. You do realize that you need to drive through a 2+ foot puddle to immerse the filter? The base of the filter starts at your fog light and is about 6" tall. Personally, I have never driven through a stream that deep and I doubt you have puddles like that where you live.

I pulled the white plasitc air bell with that 1/4" grid in it (likely a flow staightener for the MAF) out of my 1ZZ Vibe's air cleaner, because when I flow tested the system piece by piece, instead of the bell adding maybe 5% flow it lost 15%! I used a Tech II scanner before and after, and for what it's worth, the "long term fuel trim" changed from around plus 2-3% to minus 8 -10% and the mass flow @ 6,000 RPM went up (surprise!) 15%. Anyone know how much control authority the system has? (It would be great to see some before/after scanner readings with a good CAI installed.)
Like Mu_ohio said, you'd have to hit one serious puddle to risk any damage to the engine. As someone stated in a post a while back, you'd probably have water coming in over the door sills by the time you completely submerged the filter. I understand where you're coming from though. I'd say if you aren't comfortable with the CAI, go with a short-ram. I guess you have to way the horsepower versus stress level difference and see which one comes out on top. MadBill:I'll try to get my friend to bring his Tech II by and get some readings for you. I'm still running on stock equipment at the moment, but my engine is sitting in the box waiting to go. Now all I need is some extra time.
Fair enough. I know how that can go when something is not working. My grandfather has developed a technique he calls "talking" the offending object into cooperation.
His method typically contains plenty of "blue" words. I can imagine the poor mechanic on this guy's WRX will be uttering his share as well by the time he's done.
I'm still stuck on the 18 PSI and no sort of control. You'd think if he knew enough to get the boost up that high he'd know that you need to control it and/or it's side effects somehow. Yes, white smoke is an indication of a failed headgasket among other things.
I'm going to keep an eye on this post to see if he continues to update on the car's status. I can't believe the dealership could look at that engine and the damage done and agree to repair it. They'd have to know that something was up.
"And isnt white smoke the indicator of coolant in the oil? I might be wrong on that."Coolant in the combustion chamber. (Also, a new Cardinal elected or something, if it's coming from the Vatican...)

Also all the Seattle area Dealers were notified, and they all will be expecting him. (they circulated his name/VIN/lic plate)
I remember back when I read about mods that Gus Mahon when he modified his Turbo Dodge Caravan, and Plymouth Acclaim. To keep the engine from leaning out on high boost, he had a cold start fuel injector inserted in the intake pipe that was activated by a pressure switch, so when the boost reached to a set PSI, the injector would run.I think he might have also changed the stock injectors with oversized. But in anycase, if turbo is the way you want to go on any car, the important thing to do is to make sure the engine gets the fuel it needs. As for that WRX owner, I'm curious to see if any further developments occur. At the very least he could be in some really hot legal trouble.

quote:What an idiot.Enough said. I don't understand how people will have the know-how to get thier car the way he had his, and NOT know about leaning it out. That kind of knowledge goes hand-in-hand, so I feel no sympathy.
Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings, so that you shall gain easily what others have labored hard for.
those sube owners take their cars seriously...to notify all local dealers what this guy had done to his car and what he was trying to get past the dealerships is very aggressive, especially for forums such as these...but i agree that if you want to do extensive mods, understand what the reaction might be to every action you do to your mechanicals and be prepared to accept the consequences when things go wrong...i wouldnt want that wrx boy racer's bill on that engine replacement, he's probably still paying on the car, too it was great reading though, better than the local newspaper this am, lol, even better than the soaps!
A CAI does not necessarily make a car run leaner. If the car has a mass air flow sensor then it is able to adjust for the amount of air. If the car is speed density then it would lean it out a bit.Jason
My brother heard about this earlier in the year, it was rather big at VWVortex. This guy just can't take his car to anywhere in Seattle, Subaru of America was called themselves and told about this, he can not go to any dealership in the entire UNITED STATES and get this warrantied, every dealship knows about this apparently - DO NOT SERVICE THIS CAR!He got what he deserved, in all honesty, he had no idea what he was doing, and expects Subaru to pick up the tab for his ignorance - this is just not cool.Needless to say, before I do ANYTHING to my engine, I'll be researching the hell out of it ;D
