Just curious to know who will be upgrading to the new Windows OS. I ordered my copy of Home Premium and will be doing a clean install this weekend. If you are getting it which version? Or are you sticking to your current OS?Please do not turn this into a bashing session between OS's. I also use a Mac at work and like both.

I will be keeping my current OS on this computer for now. I might think about upgrading at the end of this year or beginning of next until most of the bugs are worked out.EDTI: If I get a new computer it will have Vista on it, though.

Ok, I'll try to play nice. I got to take a few minutes to play around on a laptop with Vista on it at work here recently. From what little I saw of it, it was similar XP with a bunch of added fluff. I'm not convinced all the extra cheeseball special effects are worth rendering zillions of people's PC's useless. The PC companies/hardware vendors/etc will surely benefit from this, while putting the customer in a pretty lousy position. Plenty of money will have to be spent just to stay compatible with the rest of the world. I'll have to stick with Linux, but fortunately it can still be a pretty appealing OS while running on a quarter of the hardware Vista needs. I haven't ran Windows at home for years, and now if I actually wanted to try out this new version, I simply couldn't. The PC I have is one built in 2003 - AMD Duron 1600/512 MB/crappy onboard video. It's a speed demon! But with Linux on the sucker, to this day it continues to be more than adequate for my needs. While an upgrade to something modern would be nice, I have no plans to do so.We'll be switching to it at work here soon, they're going through some tests at the moment... They upgraded all of the PC's in my department to 2 GB of RAM last week in preparation. It was a pain in the (removed) and quite costly to get everybody off of 98 and switch XP, lord knows what they'll have to go through with Vista. Hopefully since the PC's are relatively new, they can get away with just minor upgrades. But the price of a stick of RAM multiplied by 400+ adds up quick.Anyway, for those who are fortunate enough to have stuff that can run it, let us know how it works out!I will be upgrading my Mac to Leopard once it is available though. P.S. I wasn't trying to bash, just trying to say "man, this OS is gonna take some massive hardware and hardware = money!"

My 4 year old computer would never be able to handle Vista without slowing to a crawl. It's already slow enough with all the various programs and setting changes, etc that have accumulated over the years. When I get a new computer in another couple years I'll probably have to get Vista on it (preloaded).Mike

So this is a big impovement for me.Dell Inspiron E1505 I think?15.4 Widescreen with Truelife1.66Ghz80G HD2MB Ram8x DVD-R CDR driveExtended Batteryupgraded graphicssome other cool stuff. I am not big with details on computers, if it's more expensive, then it means it's better than the stuff previously offered. But I am happy with my setup. Just put Norton Antivirus on there as well. After my last two desktops crashed I was not up for another.
I too plan to upgrade my Mac ASAP, but my MS boxes will stay with XP-Pro.... Last time I jumped on the MS upgrade bandwagon, it cost me huge amounts of money and productivity.

Compared to previous Windows releases, I am not inclined to upgrade to Vista. I just don't see the point right now. In the future, if some program (AKA game) requires me to run Vista, then I might think about it. But XP runs all my current games and I am happy with it.

As of right now, we are testing it, and it seems to be a mixed crowd between workstations at this moment. For instance myself and a co-worker have the same exact Dell GX 620 tower and tried to upgrade to vista off of the same disk... (enterprise copy)Mine works fine, and his will not upgrade, and the funny thing is, i have more stuff on my Tower versus his....I will keep everyone informed on the progress....

I personally will be ordering it from the school in April (student price of like $3) but I will not install it right away. We have been testing it at work...and im on the fence about it. We installed it to a p4 gateway 600ygr laptop with 512mb ram and vista gave it a rating of 1.0 out of 10 compatibility with vista. sooo my pc might be like a 5...and well its slow as heck on that laptop and my xp is running fine for now.
if you plan to upgrade to vista, do not get an oem disk they are half price for a reason. if you need to format some time down the road you will not be able to so more than once. due to abnormal errors i've had to format XP twice since the beginning of the summeri'm on the fence about upgrading, i was running one of the beta versions in the beginning of october for a while and upon installing it, it managed to install 3 files to my spare hard drive. i tried to do a windows repair and it said it didnt know how. i dont like how it constantly asks if your sure you want to install or delete something but i think theres a way to turn that off. i do like the new appearence tho.i have since formated those 2 drives and installed suse linux onto one of them and have the other for storage in XP. i would honestly switch to linux but the programs i need for engineering dont work in linux. i have heard of a program for linux called wine? and that may help but dont know enough about linux yet. i'm having issues staying online with it on my college campus
the OEM disks should not be any different from the retail disks. The only difference is they do NOT come with the little manual and box. it is JUST the disk and key that is it. I have 2 oem XP pro's and run them with no issues.
north: from what i've heard the oem license deal was being changed for vista and that license restrictions is the reason oem cost so much less than boxed

Some of the other manufacturers haven't caught up yet though, or I guess Quark has chosen to make their new software Intel only, but Apple has no control over that.
I actually ordered a new pretty top of the line Dell desktop computer about two weeks ago so I could still get one with Windows XP. It has got all the bells and whistles like Intel Core Duo, 2mb ram, 256mb Video card, dual 250gb HD's so if one fails you have all the data on the other drive safe etc. It can handle the new Vista but I was warned that some of my unique tax and business/legal software might not work properly on Vista. Also - I am an old dog that is hard to teach new tricks. I will get the Vista upgrade for Dell's unreasonable shipping and handling fee of about $50. With a 20" wide lcd monitor and 3 years service warranty is was about $1,650 plus tax.

be cautious. when you click the windows button aka the start button then that first power button that looks like a power button. its actually a hibernate button. so if your going to do any hardware changing or anything you would do while it would be actually "OFF" do NOT. hibernate mode is not actually off so when you return on the pc it will FREAK out after any changes you made and will crash or not see the changes you made. you have to click the turning off options next to that "fake power button" and then choose OFF. that will turn the pc off the normal way you are used to and you can change all of your hardware you need to etc. They do this because booting from hibernate mode is supposidly much faster (usually is) than a cold start. So be warned.
I'm not planning to upgrade any time soon.I usually wait a good long while until there is a few service packs out, then decide that it probably still has too many bugs, and it's just not worth it.At work, all the computers are running 2000, and Office 97!My home stuff had 2000 until last fall, when my kid put on XP.I don't see any huge difference in speed or functionality, and anything else is just added fluff. As long as the operating system works, and allows you to run your programs, (isn't that really all it's there for?) then why bother to upgrade at all?My 2 cents. Canadian. worth about 1.6 cents US.

I'll still want something 3rd party.
Personally, It will be fine in the home environment, but as far as the business end. XP and 2000 are sufficient for windows OS's. I see nothing impressive in the business world for vista...

vista is a major loss in the business end for engineering (3D design programs) since microsoft got rid of open gl. it causes an 85%+ decrease in performancetop 2 chartshttp://www.tomshardware.com/20....html
HAHAHHA drunken that is an awesome pic. I have a flow chart of upgrading...dang it was on digg i should try to find it. They did forget Vista Starter though. which is the stripped down one for 3rd world countries or something crazy and only runs 3 apps at a time. ohhhh the crazyness, im not looking forward to people asking me which one they should get god they are going to be confused. I installed a HP 2200 laserjet on a vista machine today. vista found it all by itself, no cd or extra software needed but it took 10 min to install it This isnt the flow chart but its funny as heck
Right on, somebody at work sent me that and I was getting ready to come here and post it. They say variety is the spice of life... But good grief, leave the 31 flavors crap to Baskin Robins! I didn't know they had that many variations of the thing, why do they really need all that? It's only going to complicate things from the retailers on down to the computer illiterate crowd. I can't wait until people start asking me which one they should get... I guess I can give them the options "Super Vista Cruiser Turbo Iridium Special, or Vista pr0rn Cruiser 3000 Premium!" I hate because I know stuff about computers how people always come to me with windows questions, I don't know, away from work, I haven't used that stuff in forever! I know enough about XP to get by at work, other than that, I haven't a clue as I reserve my limited brain power for use on other operating systems. There's too many of us that need those "I will not fix your computer" shirts.

They got rid of Open GL? That's pretty stupid.I guess this means that most of these mid-priced CAD package users are going to have to stay with XP for a while, at least until CP decides to rewrite the code and release his bootleg version of Open (GL) Windows Vista Cruiser Super Turbo Extreme Deluxe for Business.

Yeah, the lack of OpenGL is kinda strange... I don't know why they would overlook that! That's really going to have a negative impact on companies who rely on the software that relies on the technology. Don't worry. I'll get that update right out after I finish Open (GL) Windows Vista Cruiser Super Turbo Extreme Deluxe for small to medium sized government institutions. Which I guess I shouldn't knock them for wanting to have variety, look at all the different flavors of Linux that are out there. But all of the varieties of Linux are significantly different from each other in many ways... possibly moreso than what one version of Vista would compare to another, but I don't know for sure.
