GM Confirms RWD Pontiac G8!

Post by ragingfish »

Quote, originally posted by Left Lane News »GM confirms RWD Pontiac G8Ever since the GM Australia launched its new Holden VE Commodore (pictured), rumors began circulating that GM might export the rear-wheel-drive sedan to America as a Pontiac. Some reports suggested the car would be sold as the next Grand Prix, while others indicated it would be renamed G8.Today, GM confirmed it will bring the Commodore to America as the Pontiac G8. "We are seriously planning to import a lot of Commodore SS sedans as Pontiac G8s," product development chief Bob Lutz told Australia's Drive today at the Detroit auto show, adding that the company could sell 50,000 G8s per year. "We are yet to officially announce it," he said. The Commodore and G8 ride on GM's new Zeta rear-wheel-drive platform, which underpins the 2009 Camaro and the next-generation Impala, in addition to several other planned vehicles.Source: http://www.leftlanenews.com/20...c-g8/

Ever wonder why GM, Ford, and Chrysler were in such a damn big hurry to abandon rear wheel drive years ago, for expensive and technically complicated FWD, while the Aussie's (and Germans and Italians) kept building RWD, and making them better and better??IMHO they should turn the Pontiac logo upside down, since it came from 'down under'!

Looks like they're aiming for the DCX LX platform (Charger, 300, Magnum).

IMO I really like the Pontiac badged Commodore. It looks like a mean performance sedan But I'm also very anxious to see the "offical" design, too.

Oooh, now this I want to see! Anything that comes from a per-existing Holden is bound to be nice, but they did manage to make the GTO look ugly compared to the Monaro, so I guess we'll have to wait and see. Edit: Just saw the pic and realized I saw that magazine, and that is VERY promising!

Comparing the GTO to the new G8 is not fair. The GTO that was brought in from Australia was a mid 90's designed car. The new Commodore is a NEWLY designed car so it will still be a fresh look around anywhere. I hope they do it along the lines of the G6. Too much cladding would likely turn away customers. Ohh and i hope they offer a V6 this time around.

GM has designated GM Holden in Australia as the lead engineering center for rear-wheel drive cars. They have identified lead engineering centers for all vehicle platforms.

I hope you don't mean this pic......because this is the Holden Commodore.what I mean when I say "look like a Pontiac", I don't mean the grilles, but what a pontiac should look like: wild. designed by Pontiac, not someone else.

the sheet metal will not be drastically changed ,just as Saturn doesn't drastically redesign the Vectra that they import from Vauxhall as their AURA. It will (hopefully) look unique and like a Pontiac, but don't expect it to NOT look like the Commodore.

Update!Quote, originally posted by Left Lane News »GM to redesign Pontiac G8, move production after just two years?Earlier this week, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz confirmed GM would import a rebadged version of the Holden Commodore to America as the Pontiac G8 — a replacement for the Grand Prix. The car is expected to debut at the Chicago auto show in February, and go on sale shortly thereafter. The Commodore is the first car built on GM's new rear-wheel-drive Zeta platform, which will also underpin the Chevy Camaro and other vehicles. The G8 will be built in Australia alongside the Commodore, and shipped to America. But the G8 will only come from Australia for a short time, according to a report by the Detroit Free Press. GM will move production of the G8 to its plant in Oshawa, Ontario, in 2009, where it also plans to build the new Camaro, the newspaper said. What's more, the Oshawa-built G8 will reportedly get "unique Pontiac styling." Initially, the Australian-built G8 will merely sport a Pontiac grille and badging. The "second-generation" G8 will share less sheetmetal with the Holden, if the report is to be believed. While is very unusual for an automaker to introduce a new design after only two years, GM might be using this strategy to get the G8 to market quickly, and refine the styling later.Source: http://www.leftlanenews.com/20...years
