I've just been to a local store where I wanted to make a duplicate key to my car. I was advised by the salesperson that probably the key has a special chip built-in and I have to get my dealer to make me a special key. In fact, he did make one duplicate key, but indeed, it did not work at all, I was not able to even open the door. So, I wonder, is there a special chip built-in inside the key--or any other device? I have Vibe base, no power package and no keyless entry.
since the dealer cut the key wrong, i suggest taking it back to him and have him cut it properly. and test it before you leave. question. did he copy cut it or did he do it from the key tag number? if it was the key tag number that would be weird.
You should have gotten a number on your key ring when you bought your car, just take that number up to the dealership and you can order more key's.The key you had made should have worked .
I got a key cut at one place (Canadian Tire), went out to try it, and no, it didn't work. A few days later I went to another store (a locksmith shop) to try to get a key cut, and I told him what had happened. He suggested that it might have a "chip" in it... but, the key he cut worked perfectly!So... no, there is no chip, and just persevere with getting a copy made that will work!
Last month, I went to a specialized store to have a key cut on my Vibe. This store only sells locks, keys and other things like that. They have a full satisfaction garantee and usually, they do a very good job. The guy at this place put my key in a kind of analyser of key, cut the key and he give me the copy. It costs me 3.45 $ (CAN).I went outside to my vibe and the key was working very well. So, there isn't a chip built-in, if you don't have a good copy, you just have to go back to the place they have done this job and ask for a new copy that will work or have your money refunded...

My two cents - I had one made at a local ACE hardware. At first, they couldn't match the blank because I said it was a Pontiac. After a second thought, I asked them to check the TOYOTA blanks - yep.So, it's a Toyota blank - FYI.
