YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!

Post by ragingfish »

Ladies and gentlemen --Pending some drug test and background check results (which better ALL BE CLEAR!!!), I am finally employed again! You might remember I walked out on my job at Vonage back on November 6 after being fed up by mismanagement, prison-like working conditions, and mundane work for inadequate pay. [Need a refresher? See here http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=25795]Since that day, I've been intently looking for a new job. I put in more applications than I have ever done in my entire life while job-hunting, and all the places I applied to weren't hiring. Unfortunately, my timing to leave was poor, as I was trying to get a job after the masses of college students had already sucked them up.My search continued, and my frustration and anxiety grew as my bank account shrank more and more. I started cancelling lunches and outings with friends and family in desperate attempts to save money. I even stopped going out for coffee and breakfast each morning, as I had been doing for the weeks immediately after leaving. And the anxiety got even worse, after my $442 fine for speeding, which, while currently on my credit card, will push my teetering bank account into negative numbers once the bill comes in. However, today, I decided, **** THIS BS, I'M GOING OUT AND NOT COMING HOME UNTIL I'M EMPLOYED! So I went to Lowes, walked in, and sat down with a woman from HR who I had previously talked to in regards to my application. That was about 3 weeks ago. I hadn't heard anything else. I went to the service desk, and asked for her. The guy gave me a weird look, leading me to believe many people don't come in with my kinda determination (determination - driven by desperation!) He asked me some background questions, about my employment history, if I had any experience with any particular area of the store (i.e. painting, electrical, lumber), and then he contacted HR lady (who shall remain nameless to respect her privacy, just in case there are locals on here..., and sent me back to her office. I met her back there, and her first words to me were "wow, you must've really charmed the store manager, he never sends people back to me." "Huh?" "Yeah [manager's name], the guy you spoke with up front. He's the big cheese, the head guy." I was like "ummm....OH. I WAS NOT AWARE OF THAT! *gulp*" In any case, to make a longs tory short, I turned on the charm, and managed to get a job offer right on the spot. The pay is decent (far more than I was being offered by dunkin' donuts (yes, I was SO desperate for a job I applied and interviewed there, but subsequently turned it down after i realized i would be miserable), and the work is very hands-on, which is what I've been looking for. So as I said in the beginning, when the drug test and background check both come back clean, I will FINALLY, after being unemployed, and without income, for just 2 days short of two months, HAVE MONEY AGAIN!The moral of the story? There's no holding back. THE MODDING SHALL GO ON!That is, if I can refrain from spending my money in my own store!

Dude, all I can say is have fun. My father-in-law worked there for about a year before he managed to slide over to K-Mart. Of course that's different, he was laid off from his management job the year before.Got another friend who's in his late 20's who has worked at Lowes since I knew him. Pretty good guy, he's been through ups and downs with them but has never said that the work sucked. Be prepared to do some work though! In the end, it's income! Glad you found something!

lol... again congrats on the new job. I too like lowes better but i do have to admit HD it a lot closer so i go there first hope lowes gives employees a better discount than HD. years ago I looked in to getting a second job on the weekends with HD and asked what kind of employee discount would we get. I was told, once a year at christmas time we receive a coupon for 10% off your purchace. yep, thats the crhistmas gift and the only time u get a discount. Now that was over 4 years ago, maybe they changed that

Congrats Mike. Hopefully things go well for you. I have a few friends that used to work at the Lowes in Iowa City, and they thought the company was fine, but the management sucked in their store. Typical large corporation crap. Hopefully that won't happen in your store.Good Luck

You knwo what the sad part is. I miss those kind of jobs. The ones that may not have the best pay or benifits, but you still have a paycheck, and most of the time you have more fun cause you are working with people who are about the same age and personality as you are. I worked for a few years with my best friend at a sporting goods store (I am sure you northern people know of a Dunham's), and it was great. I think it's cause, even though you need the income, you always know it's not really a career (unless you make store owner or soemthing), it's just a job, and if something happens you don't like, or you do soemthing they don't like... well.... there is always more work out there somewhere.Either way congrats, I know fighting those college kids for work can SUCK!!! and your determination (and poorness) beat them out..
