help with USB ports

I received a wireless mouse and keyboard and when I hook it up to my USB port and get it running it causes my CPU (2.4 ghz) to run at 100% so I unhooked it. and everything runs fine. now I got a new cell phone (chocolate) and when I plug it in to my USB port it causes my CPU to run at 100%. I have an HP 3 in 1 printer hooked up to a USB port and don't have a problem with it. Do I need to get a 2.0 USB? I have a Emachine with 2.4 Ghz CPU, 760 meg of Ram.

When you hook up the mouse/keyboard or the phone, despite your CPU running at full steam, do the devices function? Or do they knock the CPU up to the limit and still not work at all...And what operating system? XP? 2000?EDIT: This seems to be a common problem that I'm coming across in my research. To narrow down the possible solutions, I need to know which OS. Also, if you're running XP, let me know if you're running SP2 or not.

What is the name of the process using all the resources? USB 1.1 or 2.0 won't have any affect on the software running/causing the trouble. It only affects the transfer rate, and you'll receive a notice when you connect a 2.0 capable peripheral to a 1.1 connection. That Emachines with a 2.4 ghz processor should certainly have a 2.0 USB slot.

There's a lot of research (discussion) available using google about winlogon.exe. It boils down to the probability that the computer is infected with spyware. http://www.help2go.com/postp78015.html. The first thing to do is scan with a good antivirus (NOT Norton). Every customer in my shop gets AVG installed. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/53...-free. After viruses are clear, then a series of tools need to be run on the machine to check/clear spyware: Spybot, Adaware, HijackThis. After that some specific tools are run depending on the above results, like Previx, Smitrem, Edwido. Wireless should only be used when it's impossible to get a wire through. This will never apply to a keyboard and mouse. Why take a perfectly reliable wired mouse/keyboard and replace them with a battery dependent wireless interference prone expensive troublesome replacement? I only sell wired KB/Mouse to customers coming in looking for service on their wireless stuff that quit working.

I agree that winlogon.exe is not a legitimate system process, and you need some anti-spyware. Personally, I recommend Computer Associates' eTrust PestPatrol and Lavasoft's AdAware. I run both and together they keep my system in great working order.I disagree with his point on the wireless issue though. I would love to trade in my current keyboard/mouse combo for a bluetooth and/or traditional wireless duo. The wires are just in the way, and I have a very small work surface for my mouse which leaves my mouse always getting caught up on its own wire. It's annoying as hell.

well my phone works now. I updated my usb drivers. I reintalled the drivers for the wireless mouse/keyboard (install CD)and i didn't even get a chance to plug in the mouse/keyboard and it started acting up again. so screw it the wired mouse and keyboard is fine. I don't think I have a spyware problem. I think its computer related like maybe the battery is going, today when I went to play some music i got a window come up saying there was no mixer available. and when I went to adjust the volume control theough the control panel it wasn't accesible (it was all whited out) i rebooted a coulpe of times and it worked.

scherry2:winlogon.exe is a classic hideaway for spyware and malware. Because in some configurations, it is a legitimate - and crucial - windows system file, many people are told to leave it alone.I'd strongly advise going to lavasoft.com and downloading ad-aware personal (free) and scanning. I guarantee you have something wrong!By the way -- Norton, as I've learned, is not as fantastic as it's touted to be. It's actually a horrible system resource hog. I've since uninstalled all of norton and it's associated programs, and experienced a dramatic improvement in system stability and speed.Consider switching to eTrust Anti-Virus and eTrust PestPatrol for your AV/AS needs...I've been using them and find them very reliable, and very frugal with system resource usage...

the USB port I plugged the wireless mouse and keyboard into had a power spike. the geek squad found it and got the computer started( after I changed the CMOS battery the computer went dead)now I restored windows and everything runs fine except i have no onboard sound but I think a new sound card will fix that. accrording to the geek squad there was no spyware or virus it was the USB port making winlogo go crazy.
