Will Infinity Kappa 3way 6.5 inch fit?

Post by carguyjohn350 »

I have searched and read other threads on this topic and it seems that they should but I was hoping for a direct answer, preferably from someone with direct experience. Thanks in advance for your help. Here is a link.http://infinitysystems.com/caraudio/pro ... AP&Cat=MEL

Well, a few things.Yes, it will fit. In the back doors you'll have no problem if you remove the stock speakers. In the front doors you either need to gut the stock speakers, and use the plastic surround as an 'extension', or go out to a Circuit City / BestBuy and get the Toyota speaker spacers. I reccomend just gutting the speakers. The front doors have the windows come down right behind the speaker, so you have limited space, back door you won't have a problem. Now, I do see that these are 2 Ohm speakers, and want to run at 75w, meaning, you need at least a 2 (or 4) channel amplifier that can put out 75w x 2ch RMS @ 2Ohms. That may be a bit pricey.Just be aware that with these speakers you'll need to do some extra work. You CANNOT connect this to the stock system. If you have M&T, it WILL work, but you'll more than likely be so severely underpowering these speakers that you could be putting enough distortion through them to blow them.Just a warning.. but I think the first bit answers your question!(In case you're wondering, I have Polk MOMO 6.5"s in my doors)

ok speaker Guru's, I know I am out of my league, but aren't the stock speakers for the M&T's in the front 2 Olm? And that would be the prime impedance (sp?) cause that is what the M&T AMP is pushing out? Like I said, I don't know, but that is how I understood it. I will look back, but that is what someone told me a few days ago.Edit:In fact it was you that told me that Jahntassa....http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=26150

Here's the deal, the M&T system IS a 2 Ohm system. It's rated at 200w. More than likely that's 200w PEAK. I doubt it's RMS. The Kappa speakers shown want to have 75w RMS. More than likely the M&T amp puts out around 22.So, yes, you would have a better quality speaker, you wouldn't need to worry about 'overheating' the amplifier, as you would with 4 Ohm, but because the Kappas require so much more power (partially because they are component speakers, which have a passive crossover, that uses up some of the 'wattage'), you stand a chance of blowing the speakers by underpowering them. If you can't give a speaker the power it wants, you may end up turning the volume higher than you should, which creates distortion as you run the amplifier harder than it wants to, which then can kill the speaker. So, yes, these are 2 Ohm, and yes, they can replace the stock on the M&T system, but they're too much speaker for the system as-is.

OK, so I admit to knowing very little about car audio and I just thought I could put them in and connect the wires. Not so? (Dumb question?)In any case, what would you guys recommend as an alternative speaker. I chose these because they sound good in my Trans Am and I have a hook up on price so they arent as expensive as the msrp. Thanks again for the help.

ok, makes sence. Sorry about that it was more my fault, I read it wrong and thought you were saying it WOULDN"T work. I understand the RMS and all that..... I guess I should read before I leap, huh?I guess I just got all excited that there were 2 Ohm speakers. I just don't get why the systems aren't designed to handle upgrades of some sort. GM knows that we are going to want to upgrade, why not design it so it's a bit easier on us? Oh well, I can live with my stock system.... but like every one else, I would like a better one without changinc EVERYTHING out.

or you could just make your own spacers out of 1/2" or 3/4" MDF or both and modify the inside of the door panel.Aron

I think it's fun how every one wants to just add new speakers and think it will make them have a "system" (me included). If only it were that easy I don't think there would be people out there with $3000+ systems in thier car.Same with speed, if it were cheap to make a fast car, there wouldn't be people out there with $10,000 put under the hood of thier $15000 car.

I never said it would give me a "system." (I think you were kidding)I simply would like a clearer sound and more power than the stock paper crap speakers. Im not looking to spend a fortune on my daily driver.

Jess, Thanks for the insight, that is the kind of things most of "us" want to hear, is personal experience, and not technical stats. Where as we do need to know the tech part of it, and I am more than greatful for every ones posts, it's nice to get some thoughts on how it works, and how people like them. And carguyjohn350, I was kidding about the "system". Like I said, I am guilty of it to, hoping I could just throw in some new speakers and get a loud "boom boom". But in general, I am happy with my little stock system I have by way of sound quality.
