Does anybody else have the remote entry keyfob? Is there a timeout on yours where if you do not get in and actually start the car within a certain timeframe you will not be able to start it without using the remote to unlock the car again (even though it is already unlocked)? I guess this means you will never be able to start your car without the keyfob. Is that right?
I've never had the timeout keep me from starting. I have had it re-lock the doors however. Is this with the full security system or just the remote entry?

That's really not the same problem. The doors do not re-lock when I am in there. I can sit in the car for 30 seconds with the doors unlocked and it will then not allow me to start the car unless I actually press the unlock key on the keyfob again.
I was under the impression that I just had the remote entry, but now it looks more like I have the full security system (or part of it). Do you have the little red light under the steering column? I do, and it blinks really fast when I unlock the doors, then after the 30 seconds, the blinking slows and I can't start the car. It looks like it would be for an alarm, but the alarm didn't show as one of the options.
You definitely have the full security system. I don't have the LED under the steering column. Still doesn't sounds like normal operation to me. I suppose it could be trying to relock the doors, somehow detect you're in there and trigger the starter disable. That seems a bit complex for this system though.

The "Factory" security system has a light to the "Left" of the steering wheel labeled "SECURITY". You mentioned a light "Under" and didn't mention a label. Could your system not be a "Factory" system?
I'll check that. What it really looks like to me (although I could be mistaken) is that I have half of a full security system. The salesman (as smart as they are...) told me that the light under the dash (originally it was just hanging there) was a silencer for the security system.
What I had was a little black module with a light under the dash hanging from a cable. They secured that for me yesterday, though not very well. It has a point in the front with the light for some type of connection that looks almost like a headphone jack. It also has a hole in the back that looks like something can be plugged into.
Someone just told me page 2-15 in the owner's manual has the picture of the dash indicator. I had a friend who onced worked for a large Chrysler dealership. They would put cheap security systems on every car when they arrived for protection on the lot. When the car was sold they would hope to sell the system to the customer.

I'll give that a try when I get to the car. Where exactly is the "official" spot? What I had was hanging down when I bought the car. I took it back yesterday and told them to attach it where it needed to go and they stuck it under the steering column to the right - ony thing is they put it on with one screw and it swivels. I guess I'll have to put the other screw in there.
Okay, it doesn't look like I have the full alarm system because when I roll down my windows and unlock the door from the inside, nothing happens. This is what I did find out, though, so tell me if this still sounds right or if I should have it looked at (I still think there is some type of alarm system in there). I unlock the door without the keyfob. I get into the car and wait 30 seconds. I cannot start the car unless I unlock the door from the outside with the key. The blinking light (doesn't look like the factory security one) flashes fast for the 30 seconds, then slows down after that. Can somebody with just remote entry do me a huge favor? Go out to your car, unlock it with the key from the outside. Count for more than 30 seconds, then try to start the car. Does it work? If not, look under your dash (steering column area) and tell me if you see any blinking red lights anywhere.
I believe that you have proven that you do not have a Pontiac Factory Security System. Make an appointment with the selling dealer to have what ever is in the car disconected, since you said you didn't pay for a security system and don't like the way this one works.
Some dealersin large urban areas install security systems on cars they have out on their lot. Did you buy your Vibe out of dealer stock or did the dealer trade for it? We have had situations where we dealer traded for a car or truck and never new they had a security system on them till a problem comes up.
I might as well add a note of humour to this discussion.A couple of weeks ago, I accidentally left my key and fob in the pocket of my pants, which I then, of course, threw into my washing machine. When it came time to empty the machine, I found the key chain and fob sitting on the bottom of the washing machine. I had visions of having to buy a new one.I went outside, pressed the buttons, and Bingo! Everything worked perfectly, and has continued to do so.
I've done the same thing with a cell phone, still works fine.Larry
