Power window controls, can i change switches so they all have auto down?

Post by Train »

Ok, i don't know if this is an interior question, but it seemed closes too this. On the power window controlls on the driver side the driver window has an auto down function. The other three don't, well the question is simple, how hard would it be to alter the other windows to also have the same auto down abilty Thanks, any info is helpful The Train Man

Not sure...I think it's electrically / relay controlled...i'm not too sure how the whole window switch thing works as i've never taken one apart, but it might be possible.

Getting the switches out in the front door is fairly easy. You need to pry up at the top, there's a spring-clip. The bottom kinda angles and then pulls out.It might be easier to take the doorpanel off, then pop the switchpanel out.. I've noticed the switches are a bit hard to just pull out.

Should be raily easy. When you push the drivers side window it has an extra click to make it go all the way down on its own so Im guessing you would have to get the same type of switch for the other windows. Wonder if the one auto wondow swicht can be installed on all the rest window swithces.

It might be possible, but the circuitboard inside the switch assembly might not have the room for it. Unless we figured out exactly how the "auto" part worked..we can't tell for sure..

I was just seeing if any one has looked into this at all. I find it pointless to be able to roll one down, but still hold the button for the passenger window. I mean, it's not that big of a deal, not alot of extra work or anything, but it would be cool to be able to do it. I am going to the Pontiac Dealership this week for some warranty items, I will ask them if they sell just the one button, or if I have to buy the whole bezzle....

the window switch from a dealer will cost more than its worth. Check out a junkyard, or they sometimes show up on ebay. I think the whole switch assembly is one unit, it's not like you can get three more driver window switches and replace the non-auto down ones.

Good luck.I think you'll find the master window switches are all part of a single assembly. I don't think each switch can be changed individually, but let us know what you find.

my old 98 VW golf had auto up/down for all 4 windows with a stop sensor prevent it from crushing a hand.2 problems:on REALLY hot days when the rubber around the top of the window slightly changed shape, it became a hassle closing the window as it would trigger the safety stop. i'd have to hold the switch to force it to close and bypass the safety stop.second problem. i'm not sure what determined when the auto up/auto down stopped (even on our car) but one hot day (i hate hot days) i hit the auto down and when the window got to the bottom, the motor kept going and it snapped the plastic clip that the window rides on. as a result, i could put the window up but nothing was supporting it and it would slowly slide down with bumps on the road. i also couldn't put the window down anymore as there was no clip there to 'pull' it down.in the end, the clip was stupidly expensive and so i opened my door and stuck a 2x4 in the door to hold the window shut. I then disconnected the front and door switches for that window and it became the most secure window in the car!just thought i'd share my experiences with auto up/down and the potential issues.
I have signatures turned off so I'm not even sure what mine says in this space!

nay...it will not work that easily. You can buy express up/down kits from hot rod shops for power window installations. The express down senses stall current and shuts off power to the window motor. Not all window power control is by relay, some are use power FETs. I don't know what the Vibe uses, but, I haven't really heard a relay clicking inside. The two stage switch is of a special function, one click allows manual down, one click allows express.I'd suggest not messing with this, unless you're very familiar with electronics, motors, and don't like fried electrical.

I'm driving an '06 Camry Solara as a rental this week while traveling on business. I noticed that the Solara has both a one-touch up and down driver power window, and it sure looks like the same switch in my vibe (at least the actual swich, not the trim around it). What I'm wondering is : if that switch was transplanted into a Vibe, would it provide the one-touch up most of wish we had?Perhaps one of the Toyota gurus here can answer if it'll work?
