Problems with headlights!

Post by OpSig61 »

When headlights *should* be on, the only lights that turn on are the bottom fog lights. The top actual headlights only turn on when the bright lights are turned on. I'm pretty sure this is not normal. The GM dealer told me the headlights must be burnt out and to replace them, although I'm confused as to why he thinks they are burned out when they turn on with the bright ligths! Anybody have any help / suggestions? Thanks!

you have a duel filament bulb so the highs would still work if the low beams are burn out. Not likely that both burn out at the same time though.. that's like a 4 million to one chance.. Are your parking lights on as well if not check a few of your fuses.

Welcome aboard, frst of all. Secondly, it is possible that they can burn out at the same time - but it seems so remote. I had a set of Silverstars in the fogs on my Vibe, sure enough I went to turn them on and neither one worked. It was natural at first to suspect an electrical fault somewhere. But sure enough though, both bulbs were blown. And like what was said before, the bulbs contain filaments for both high and low beams. They are independent of each other, so one can burn out while the other remains on. Seeing how both bulbs were zapped, I suppose you could have had some wild voltage fluctuations when the lights were on that was too much for the bulbs to handle.I'd say check the bulbs and see what they look like. They could very well be blown.

I've seen lowbeam headlights burn out in pairs before. However from my own experience I'm always burning out the driver's side... and most difficult one to replace. go get some new ones under warranty if your car is still covered under new car.

That happened to me last fall. Sunset coming earlier, and I was a bit late getting out of work, first time I had to drive at night in a while, and I realized both of my low beams were out. both highbeams worked fine. I was about 40 miles from home, so faced with parking the car overnight, driving with no headlights, or driving with highbeams in traffic, I chose the highbeams. I sure pissed off a lot of people that night, but there wasn't much I could do about it. so yes, both low beams can burn out at the same time (or perhaps, both low beams can be discovered to be burned out at the same time)
