I was feeding my two German Shepherds Hills Science Diet Large Breed Lite. Both dogs are over 90 pounds, and while they're not overweight yet, the vet recommended lite food to keep them that way.So yesterday when I went to buy more food, I found out that Hills is discontinuing this line of food. After doing some research, I've decided to switch to Nutro Large Breed Weight Control. It seems to be a better quality food with less fillers. So I'm blending the two brands now while I'm making the switch. So, I'm curious what you guys are feeding your pets. Any Nutro users out there. Cat owners are welcome to comment, too.

I don't think I know of anyone who uses Nutro, but I do know a lot of people on the dachshund board I post on feed Nature's Balance. Ours get Iams active maturity, which is a senior food. Before switching to that, they were eating Iams Less Active/Weight Control/whatever they are calling it now. They have eaten Iams all of their lives and are 13 and 11 and happy and healthy.
mine was on Nutro and it's good... we swtiched to Wellness and it's really good. IMOthere was a post on a dog forum once upon a time that had a rating system based on the ingredients... Wellness and i think it was Natures Balance were tops. You would be shocked at where the big names place. I will search for the link and post it if i find it.

When i first got my cat Andy I fed him Science Diet, and he has BAD gas ALL the time! It was nasty! So I switched to Iams Indoor Cat Weight Control, and he is fine now. Maybe a little overweight still but I never let him outside, so he doesn't get much exercise, other than when we play.
Eliminating gas would be worth the price of any new food!

are they eliminating it completely or are they just changing it? my dog gets the senior large breed formula and they recently changed it to "Advanced Protection, Senior". they also raised the price $4/bag.
My lil' boy Bean was getting Eukanuba puppy stuff when I got him, once he was older it was Iams Minichunks for most of his life thus far. But I saw the "Toy and small breed" stuff at Kroger the other night so I gave it a shot. He seems to like it... He'll eat anything though. He seemed to like the stuff I bought at the pet store a couple times for cheaper back when I had $10 in the bank just as much as the more expensive stuff.I do need to find some sort of weight control food that will be small enough to eat, the doc said he was getting too heavy (Yorkie at ~8 lbs.) However he's not fat, and the doc said... "wow, he has a lot of muscle mass!" Yeah, 'cause he bounces off everything all the time. And the rest of that is probably hair. lol! Next bag I'll get something that will be better for him dropping a couple pounds.

I feed my German Shepard only the best. Canine Caviar. If your dog is "gassy" it's because of the fat in the formula. Just find a lower fat formula that will work. Like a Lamb or low-fat chicken formula. And stay away from any foods that have wheat, corn, or soy in them.
Quote, originally posted by BlueCrush »I use Science Diet Light for my two Border Collies. Is it just the large breed light they are discontinuing? I haven't heard anything about it.As far as I know, they are just eliminating the Large breed Lite. That is what they told me at Care-A-Lot. I found them to be cheaper than Pet Smart. My two aren't quite old enough for Senior food, yet. They are both still active at five and six years old. Addressing the gas issue, I noticed the Hills has allot more corn filler than the Nutro. So far they love their new food. I don't know if it tastes better, or if it's just because it's something different. I haven't tried it, myself! Of course I'm talking about animals that have been known to eat cat poop, for what that's worth!

I'll sell you my neighbors dogs. Then Maybe I could sleep without them barking 24/7. To keep on the subject, I dont feed my dog anything.....I dont have one.

This food question is right up my alley as I'm the Midwest's distributor of Canine Caviar and proud that it is one of the top ten foods in the country. Second, I won't try and sell you on Canine Caviar but can amswer questions you have on nutrition. I've learned a ton in the 5 years I have been doing this. Of course I'm talking about animals that have been known to eat cat poop, for what that's worth! Most Senior foods are ok for adults in fact we changed the name from Senior to Special Needs because it caused to much confusion. Our food is just a lower fat chicken blend, more Yucca for the hips and joints, and a flatter kibble rather than the round kibble for the older dogs to chew. It has been a god send for the Greyhound and Wippet breeds since they some of the worse gas problems with the higher fat foods. It's great you have moved away from a food with corn. Any "hot spots" and excess shedding in a dogs coat is directly linked to these cheap fillers.I have tried all of our foods since it is human grade and all natural and it is tasteless. The verdict is still out in why dogs go for the cat poop, some say lack of nutrition, and others say it goes way back to when they were wild. All I know is it's alot of work to train them not to do it, or just let them have their snacks. I think the biggest concern it what you use as litter. One doesn't want their dog eating too much clay.Again I'm not trying to push any product. You folks have brought up subjects that I know alot about, and I'm just trying to anwer them.
Thanks for the nutrician education. I never knew that the fillers could lead to hot spots. My female has recently had some minor trouble with hot spots, no maybe a switch in food will help her out. I wish I was as picky about the food that I eat! That's what I like about this forum. Anybody can ask any question and somebody here knows the answer!

And as one Shepard owner to another look for a food with lots of Omega 3 & 6 (fish oil) to help control the shedding problem we all have in this breed. You can easily add fish oil to any food and your dogs will love you even more than they do now.
best thing i ever did for my dog was to switch to Precise Plushttp://www.precisepet.com/pplusCDry.asphe was diagnosed with hip dysplasia 2 years ago and was limping quite a bit. this food was recommended to me by a friend as it contains a decent amount of cartilage and some pretty good natural stuff (dried egg, carrots, etc.) which you can read at that link.Since about a month after starting this he has consistantly improved and while he's not the super runner he once was, he's not limping and the vet is happy with his weight control and general joint 'fluidity' of movement.(also has the above mentioned fish oil too! )...PS: i don't work for this company but just thought i'd share the good results!for other types: http://www.precisepet.com/pplus.asp
I have signatures turned off so I'm not even sure what mine says in this space!

I just bought a bottle of fish oil and put some on their food last night. Man, did they love it. Great advice. Thanks! I also learned that when you have two indoor Shepherds, buy a good vacuum! Maybe I should start a vacuum cleaner thread.

Recently inherited two pups - and that makes three! They all get Iams. The older one (12 yr old shih-tzu) gets the senior little bites and I mix in rice (about 1 portion rice to two portions dry food) but that's because the dry food is tough on the few teeth he has left and wet food makes him way to gassy and 'loose'.The others (8 yr old finnish spitz and 4 yr old pug) get some rice as well, but not as much in proportion. We had the problem of the spitz eating WAAAYYY too quickly causing him to frequently choke (even before we got the other two). We solved this by placing a softball on top of the food - it allows enough space for his snout, but he's gotta work at it. It used to take him literally 30 secs to eat 3/4 cup of dry food and now takes him a couple minutes...

I use "Pedigree large breed" small chunks usually. Other times I buy the large chunks which has added Protein but is the same food so my dogs don't have any stomache issues. Shepherd is 3yrs and 75LBS and Pit bull is 3yrs and 77LBS. They have maintained there exact weight since fully grown. It comes in 44LB bags so I dont have to buy it to often. It seems to be good for them. I used to use some food called "Natural" or something like that. Very expensive. My dogs pooped constantly. It was horrible. So I changed and no probs after that.
