ONLY when WET

Post by jasonvibe »

We have had more than the usual rain here in the northeast. My AWD has less than 10k. 2 times in 2 weeks while traveling home in the rain @35mph or so > applying the brakes. They just shuddered, & car shook when they were applied. Not a warped rotor or ABS kicking in. It only happens in the rain after traveling for about 5+ miles. It's a big thing when braking down hill. Scared the heck of me. But then after applying the brakes a few more times it goes away. Never an issue when dry. I want some info prior to seeing the dealer. I don't want the dealer to just cut my rotors and replace the pads.Has anyone heard of a TSB about bad brake pads??? I know there is a possibility as bad pads. I have had motorcycles with crap pads when new, doing similar. Again, only in the rain....cheers...

there isn't a TSB about the brake pads, but my AWD did something similar a few times, then I changed the brake pads to the GM Durastop Ceramic, and it never did it again.

There's nothing wrong. Most cars with calipers will shudder whenever you apply wet brakes. They return to normal after they dry. I think the manual or most driver's ed books outline wet driving and how you should gently pump the brakes a few times to dry them off before applying them normally. Please don't go to the dealer, they will laugh at you.

I had a similar problem with my 03, but I also had the issue when it was dry. Apply the brake lightly when going downhill and the brakes would "grab" and slow the car suddenly. Kinda scary at first, but I ended up expecting it. Took it to the dealership and they said it was normal and I believed them. I haven't had that issue with my 05 yet, but I no longer make that same daily drive that had a huge hill to drive down... might have to give it a shot again just to see what happens.

Let me see ...this is my 10th car. All of my cars I have put a minumum of 60k on, some over 200k. NONE of those have done this. IT is NOT what I expected or normal. "Normal",That's what a dealer talking to a newbie might say. NOW, Imagine you have an emergency situation in the rain. You cannot gently apply the brakes. "Pumping the brakes", was refered to before anti-locks were invented. ..I will check into putting on other pads..If that's all it takes, I will do it myself. Can I only get the Durastops at the GM/Pontiac dealer?...Are you sure they are different than the originals? ...only 10k and changing pads , UGH!...... or should I wait another 10k?...I do appreciate the replies.

i don't recall my vibe ever doing that. and trust me, i drove downhill in wet weather all the time. perhaps i was just used to it? dunno. i'd swap out the brakes, or as long as you feel comfortable, wait another 10K miles.

TRD, I thought I noticed this once before with the car almost new. But I thought it was a bumpy off ramp I was on. Went by it today, it was never bumpy. I don't go to anyone for brake jobs because they will cut your rotors no matter what. This is a waste. It only takes 200-300 miles for the pads to bed in on non-cut rotors. I only want to get quality ceramic pads. Previous car, I had purchased other pads that fit sloppy. This I want to avoid. Ceramic has the least dust...TNparts, I wonder what the GM ceramics should cost ? Many dealers by me significantly increase prices of parts.

My Vibe (06) has been doing this for the past 30K miles (100 miles per day) ...had it back to the dealer 2X and they thought I was crazy until I stopped in one day during a torrential downpour and insisted that they drive it and BOY did it GRIND ... and POOR stopping, definately a problem, BUT they couldn;t find anything wrong with it and wouldn't replace the pads/rotors. This has been a constant problem to the point where I won't let any family members drive it in wwet weather except me.I'm replacing the pads/rotors very soon, so hopefully the problem will solve itself.

My '03 AWD did it, and I fixed it by also going to the Durastop Ceramic Brake Pads. You can also get the Raybestos Premium Ceramics, as they are the same exact pad (Raybestos makes the DuraStop line for GM)

*shruggs* depends on where you can get the best price. The DEALERSHIP, has a $71 list price. Check around local parts stores that carry Raybestos for their price.
