2005 vibe automatic transmission surges and binds

Post by tneville »

My 2005 has about 35,000 km on it and I have started to notice what I originally thought was a "sticky" throttle situation, but after reading a few threads in this forum, I now realize it is a "surging and braking" phenomenom that seems to occur when letting up on the throttle at around 40 mph (60 K). The tranny seems to want to shift to a lower gear and then surge back up again, giving the feeling of hesitation. The tac. consisitently shows a sharp dip and then revs back up again quite noticeably. Somebody mentioned engine mount adjustments, but that sounds weird. I also seem to feel that the auto tranny doesn't shift correctly at lower speeds when on level grade road. The engine either sounds like it is labouring or is reving to high. Hope I haven't bought a lemon. HELP!tn

first of all... WELCOME! this is not a problem really I think it's just how the car is. You can try the Drive By Wire reset and see if that helps (I'm assuming you have a non-AWD base) you can find it here: http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=25238

Thanks for your help and the welcome! I tried the starter/pedal syntax and found that it really doesn't make a difference. I'm probably just paranoid or obsessive, but it is my first ever new car off the lot. I just had a brake pedal noise fixed under the warranty that I will eleaborate in another post if you're interested. I'm finding this forum and the whole concept really helpful and quite interesting.tn

I found the Toyota engine/tranny combo could be a bit "irritable" at time. But you'll get used to it after a while. My G6 responds a bit funky when the engine is cold as well...
YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!

One owner's individual experience adds to the collected knowledge. When a member posts about a problem and follows up with what the fix was, it is data that can be used by the next person to have a similar problem. If it is a problem and fix that has already been described many times before, additional reports of the same can help identify a trend or a widespread issue. Currently in my car I hear a noise when I step on the brakes, not critical, but at some point I am going to try to figure out the cause. I'll probably start by searching here for brake noise threads, to give me an idea of common brake noise problems real people have had with Vibes. Welcome to genvibe, I have the manual tranny base, so I have no experience with the auto tranny shifting patterns, but it does seem to be a recurring concern here.

one of the MANY reasons i'm glad mine's standard... no auto tranny to worry about! after dealing with the problems of te tranny in my boyfriend's '99 monte carlo z34 and some "GM vehicles" i'm sticking to my guns with getting manual trans.anywho, WELCOME! and hope you get everything figured out.plus, stick shift keeps a lot of people from asking if they can drive my car!

this is normal... you just kind of catch the tranny in between what it deems to be comfortable gearing. It sucks that 50kmph and 60kmph is what speeds this happens as this is the speeds in most areas. It will do it again at about 130 (i think, i will try later) but you dont really notice it as much.

I thought I had this problem fixed. My car went in for a noisy suspension and came out with a readjusted motor mount. For awhile, the RPMs didn't drop out, but it came back. I think it's in the computer programming and the computer is just being lazy in stopping the RPMs when they get down where they are supposed to.
