Tail pipe extention

Post by canadavibegt »

I was a little pissed at Pontiac when I looked closer at that nice tail pipe extentions they put on was steel....... (no chrome or polished aluminium). Mine was rusting the day I got my car.i used some metal cleaner (rust remover) then a mild polish.... I came up realy nice.... Kind of had a semi gloss/satin thing going on. Anway showed it to a Matrix guy I know and he was realy inpressed. Any other ideas or compounds...... I am thinking of polishing it then spraying it with a clear enamal.......

I won a pair of Megs steel exhaust tips a few years ago as a prize in a car show. When I got them, the directions specifically demanded that they be coated on the inside with a high-temp clear enamel before installation. I bought the clear coat and coated the insides 4 times, but traded in the car before I got to install them, so they were never used. I can't say if they would yellow or peel or not myself, however, I seriously doubt that the manufacturer would include this in the directions if it would cause problems.

What? The hi temp clear enamel or being told to clearcoat the exhaust tips?

You don't want the rust to pit through the metal and ruin the chrome finish on the outside. A quick run over the rust with some steel wool will take the rust off the inside of the tip. Don't use steel wool on the outside, though, because it will scratch it all up. Is the tip welded on or just clamped on?

Well, that makes things a little tougher. I would have suggested cleaning off the inside and coating it with the high-temp clearcoat like I did on my Megs tips. They were never used and have been sitting in my mom's basement for about 5 years now. Not a spot of rust on them and there never has been yet.

My Flowmaster 60 series muffler should be here any day now. I picked out a stainless steel tip for mine when the muffler goes on. I'll have to let you know.
