Battery Removal

Post by Katscan »

The other day I had to change my driver side headlamp and thus I had to remove the battery. My question is, when I removed the positive terminal there was all this white powdery crap all around it. Is this something I should be concerned about? What the heck is it!?

Clean it good and apply Vaseline to the terminal and clamp.

You can clean it with a paste of baking soda to neutralize the acid, rinse and apply di-electric grease.

It is also the first sign of a weak battery.

I'm going with CAN-AWD-VIBE on this one. The white stuff is nothing more than corrosion. BUT, if not cleaned up. Sooner(or later) if will eventually be another factor that causes battery failure.

Well when the weather clears up Im gonna go get that taken care of. And just to make sure, you remove the positive 1st and when putting it back together the positive goes on last.....is this correct?

Remove the negative first, and put it back on last.

In some cases it could be a sign of a leaky battery...vapor leak perhaps...next time you're at the dealer I'd mention it to them...but don't make a special trip for it...
