i've been gone for a bit...

Post by drunkenmaxx »

well, my stepfather passed away thursday morning at about 2:00am, so i have been gone a while. my poor mom, it's her second husband lost within 4 years and she just lost her mom 6 months ago!so we have now a dilema: he was a huge baseball card collector. my mom doesn't want to keep the cards, so she wants to sell them. sounds easy enough right? the problem is that he had somewhere between 3+ milliion baseball cards, starting from the 60's to the present. we have no idea what something of this magnitude would be worth or even where to begin.does anyone here know about baseball card collecting and would be able to offer some advice for my mom?

they sell books for values and you might search online for a card collector site and see what offers are. or go to a card shop and get info.DONT sell the whole thing till you look at them. you might be able to make a lot of money off them help her/u out. Cards are valuable... good luck and post some pics of them.

If you want a fair and accurate value, you may have the whole collection appraised...it may be kind of expensive, but a collection that large will probably more than cover the cost of an appraisal. Otherwise, you may be able to pick up a Beckett (card magazine) and get an idea. And my deepest heartfelt condolences to you and your family...

there's a lot of coin in that cardboardthere's a lot of cardboard in that pile thats worth less then the cardboard it was printed on.be very careful with this collection there are appraisers out there that will try to rip you off and they can be very convincing. If thats a no and it is cataloged well... grab a Beckett, find the cards that are worth something and sell (or keep) those. Then just get rid of the rest for 5 bucks per 50 or something like that.Whatever you choose it is a big project. Just be sure to not get ripped off.

in all honesty, it's nearly impossible to look up 3 million cards in a beckett, that would literally take years.i don't know, i guess the best is to go to the local card shop and ask them about it.

no dont look at all of them... look at the years you have... look in the Beckett for the ones that are worth something and get those ones only.leave the rest and sell them as a group or at a garage sale

thank you...I had to do this when my wifes uncle died.Much, much smaller scale and all his cards sucked (i think a few of his brothers got there first)I figured out the sets and what years they were... cruised through the beckett and found the cards worth more then $50... went hunting for them. I did ok but not enough cards to REALLY make it worth it.But hopefully (from a $$$ point of view) this works out better for you.Good luck

sorry to hear about the loss drunken, better late than never. about the cards: i agree w/ can-awd. there are gonna be some very valuable cards in there, and a lot of worthless ones as well. just to give you an idea of how much those lil rectangles can be worth, my cousin sold part of his collection from when he was younger and used the $$ as the down payment for his house.but regardless of what someone tells you how much you can get for em, they're only worth as much as someone's willing to pay for emthere is one good thing about the worthless cards... they can be used for emergency toilet paper
