at work this week, someone was playing some music, and a song came on and i said, "oh, this reminds me of rollerskating". and a couple other people agreed. so we started going through our music collection and playing songs that were classic rollerskating songs.so, i'm asking you... what are the first few songs that pop into your head when you think back to your rollerskating days?my skating days were about 1982-1987the songs i remember the most were:michael jackson - don't stop til you get enoughmichael jackson - rock with yourick james - give it to mesugar hill gang - rapper's delightsugar hill gang - apachethe clash - rock the casbah
How ironic, we were just discussing this today in the grad student office...all because someone played Ace of Base. So yeah...Ace of Base - "The Sign" and "All that She Wants" (Tennessee)Garth Brooks - "Shameless" and "Papa Loved Mama" (Ohio)I know that seems a little backward given the locales and country vs. pop but it's true...Garth Brooks was played constantly at Middletown Skate, and Ace of Base was requested a lot at Skate City.
Must be a global phenomenon, because we have an informal list of our favorite "Great Skate" songs from the late 70's-early 80's ("Great Skate" was the name of the rink, btw). One will pop on the radio and we'll call a friend and remind them..."Hey, 'Great Skate' song number fourteen..."Don't Go Breakin' My Heart" by Elton John and Kiki Dee"..So, here's some of our songs...in no particular order:Slow Ride - FoghatWalk This Way - AerosmithDisco Duck - Rick DeesStar Wars - (disco version)Island Girl, Don't Go Breakin' My Heart, Philadelphia Freedom - Elton JohnListen to What the Man Said, Silly Love Songs - Paul McCartney & WingsFlashlight - Parliment Funkadelic
I'm almost afraid to ask, but what is "spin the stick"?
"Don't look to the government to solve your problems, the government is the problem." Ronald Reagan"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." Ben Franklin.
well, everyone lines up around the edge of the skating floor and stays in one spot. there is a stick in the middle - one end has a point on it that sits on the ground, the other end has skate wheels on it. one of the skate guards spins the hell out of the stick, whoever it stops and points at wins a free popcorn, pickle, pretzle, etc.

ok jeff goldblum is totally creeping me out right now. kinda like the old guy that used to spin the girls at my roller rink used to creep me out. he would practically hold court in the middle area and the girls would liiiine up so they could spin. they would grab on to each other at the hands and he would help them spin around in circles. which reminds me of my favorite all time 80s tune "You Spin Me Round" like a record baby...it never gets old...i remember the limbo, the ball game (throw a beach ball into a bucket and get a piece of candy), the hokey-pokey-for game stuff.songs, i remember lots of madonna ('83-'85), and for the couples skates, for some odd reason "secret lovers" by atlantic starr comes to memory. for some reason once you hit like 8th grade it was all of a sudden totally uncool to go rollerskating.

Well, the most noted that I remember for me would be. The Cha Cha Slide, Hokey Pokey, All My Life - Foo Fighters (speed skate), and Atomic Dog - George Clinton.
Heh, Sugar Hill Gang, can't go wrong there. Rapper's Delight and 8th Wonder (which I was listening to over and over last week for some reason.) I didn't go to the roller rink regularly, and I actually never got out there skating. Just couldn't do it, probably still can't. Ahh (er uhh) the music. I think on my first visit the first thing I ever heard there was Eddie Grant's Electric Avenue, but I don't recall the others, I was in kindergarten. lol! . A few years later: Guns-n-roses Paradise City, some Def Leppard hits which the ones played escape me now, same goes for Bon Jovi, then the Salt-N-Pepa tune like Raging mentioned, Tone Loc's Funky Cold Medina, and while I had stopped going there, other kids were talking about this bad *** song they were hearing there, something about ice baby... THe ol' roller rink closed down in the mid 90's which was a good thing... By that time, if you weren't a total sleazeball, you'd get the crap kicked out of you for setting foot in that place. Oddly enough it is now part of a church, as is the town's only movie theater which was adjacent to the property.

My roller skating days were in the early to mid fifties. Darned if I remember the songs, but I still remember a couple of those cute, young things.Memory is a good thing.
