dvd/gps system...

Post by meathead333 »

anyone remember how much extra the dvd/gps option was? how much does it cost for the factory aftermarket unit? anyone know if its better to get the GM one or a non factory unit. i am kinda wishing i would have gotten my vibe with one. my dealer didnt have any at the time. ther other day some lady stopped me in a parking lot and asked how iliked my vibe, she had one too, but with the dvd/gps. she showed me the system, i must say its pretty cool.

I got mine on 3/9 with the Nav system. It is really cool. The sticker price for the option is $1600 and it includes a 6-disc under the front seat cd changer. I like it a lot and use it quite a bit in my line of work. All my friends are jealous and want one now.

I have to imagine an aftermarket is significantly more expensive. At hte factory, they have the ability to place the gyros and GPS receivers and whatnot in the right locations, while the car is being built. Aftermakret, they may have to work REALLY hard to get that stuff in there, and then you won't even have the factory look to it. You'll just have some strange thing hanging out there, ya know? I wanted it, but being a poor college student, obviously it was the first thing to go on my checklist. lol.

You can probably get an aftermarket unit cheaper than the $1600 MSRP for the factory unit, but I really like the factory-installed look, the fact that it's covered by the GM warranty, the 6-disc changer, etc. Your tastes and priorities may differ.Oh, yeah... I really like the RDS radio data display on the video screen... a couple of stations around here show the title and artist of the song that is playing. I just got back from a drive to Toronto, and up there, some stations show brief news headlines, weather, etc. on the RDS display!!By the way, it doesn't seem that there are that many owners here who have the nav system. I wonder if Pontiac is keeping it as an option for 2004?

The vibe is too new, IMHO, to judge how popular a feature may be. I'd imagine they would give it a good 2-3 years before deciding it's not marketable.Look at the sunfire. The sedan version didn't sell many for about 4 years before they finally nixed it.

Im working with my dealer to have the GPS installed with the Moonroof if possible.I told myself I would spend that on a new sound system anyway so why not get the factory unit.

just a question about the dvd/gps system: This may sound like a dumb question but I'll go for it anyway. Does it play DVD's or just navigational type things. I haven't read anywhere (yet) about plying DVD's, but then again I never paid much attention to it. Thanks Rob

It will also play audio CDs in the head unit, but then of course you can't use the navigation features at the same time.

It's like the difference between a movie dvd and a software dvd...for example...a microsoft encarta software dvd is not the same as your big fat greek wedding movie...the car is only loaded with the ability to decode software, not movies. at least that's my guess.

well then it's a good thing i didn't get it. Last time I went somewhere I took a map. It worked out just fine for me! Plus I think I can save $2000 on a video DVD setup and use it for other goodies.

Or you can get one of these:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... y=34289For around $400-500 and get most of the same functions, and also have the ability to use it away from the car. In case you ever wanted to go hiking or use it while driving another car. Oh yeah, not to mention, the ability to download and upload maps and trails to a PC.

I was thinking of doing something similar. I have a laptop preloaded with MS Streets & Trips. I was gonna buy a GPS receiver, hook it up to the laptop, interface it with S&T, and then I'd have my nav system. I've already developed a mounting system that attaches the laptop to the table-back of the passenger seat. So while it's no DVD nav system, hey, it works, right? LOL!
