Mac and Itunes help needed

Post by tnpartsguy »

OK, here's my problem; my mac mini is pre-Intel with an 80 gig HDD (74.4 usable). Well, with all the movies and music, plus various programs, the HDD is full.....so I bought a LaCie Firewire HDD 160 gig (you know, the really cool one that looks like a mini!) I then split it into 2 partitions, both 74.4 gig and labeled one "Music" and one "Backup". I then dragged the itunes folder to the one marked "Music" thinking that it would just move the stuff, but what it did was copy it..... I really need to free up some space on the main HDD (named "Luna", btw)...how do I actually MOVE the iTunes files and free up the space?

You'll need to delete them from the HD in the mini once you've copied them all to the LaCie drive. Then when iTunes complains about not being able to find the music, you should be able to point it at the new directory.

Here's what I did with my cluster*bleep* of a library once I got my LaCie for the mini. (killer drive, btw. )I had two different set(s) of music files out there, on the Linux box I had a NFS share with close to 40 GB of stuff; and on the mini, in my home directory/iTunes/iTunes Music, all the podcasts, crap I've bought off the iTunes store, crap I've ripped, etc. was there.I created a 'Music' directory on the LaCie. (Had to rename the drive itself to LaCie to avoid NFS complications when trying to access it via the Linux box.) In mp3 were two folders, iTunes and mp3. I copied all the crap off my Linux box to the 'mp3' folder and inside iTunes, I copied the entire contents of my Music/iTunes/iTunes Music folder that was on my mini's drive. After that, I went into iTunes --> Preferences --> Advanced and made sure "Copy files to iTunes music library when adding files" was turned off so it wouldn't try to duplicate the music I want to keep separate, and changed the library location to my LaCie/Music/iTunes Music. THAT's what you need to do especially, change that iTunes library folder in preferences. Then, highlight your entire library in iTunes and clear it. Once that is done, just open Finder and drag your folders on the LaCie that have the music over to the iTunes Library. It's a dirty way to do it, you can probably get by with just using the iTunes library location and not the 2-directory crap that I have. I just like to keep the crap I buy off iTunes and poscasts and stuff separate than my old-skool mp3z for some reason. Hope this helps, probably doesn't. My iPod and iTunes library management is a little, shall we say, unique. I've often been fussed at that I don't let the mac do the crap that it's supposed to do for me, but that's just the loser linux dweeb coming out. Hopefully what the Mrs. suggests will work, that'll be easier. If not and in summary maybe try to clear your iTunes library after setting the library to its new home and then use finder to drag your music back over from your new partition to the library and it should add them for you. (but i'd temporarily turn off the copy to your library feature in case it tries to get all crazy and dupicate the stuff.)
