I gave in...

Post by 2002sportside »

My '05 Vibe base just passed 12k and I couldn't resist the mod bug anymore. In the past month I've installed a Cosmo CAI, DC Sports header and a Cosmo Racing underdrive pulley. On the way are a Progress rear sway bar, TRD strut bar, AEM alt pulley and the parts to add the power port in the center console. There is probably something else too that I'm forgetting. So much for staying stock Now I need to decide how to lower it and save up for the rest of the performance parts. It's nice to be modding a car again

how is that alternator pulley? is it difficult to install?Go with some tien s-techs... pretty good price and have a nice drop and ride.

I haven't done it yet but it doesn't look too bad. Without an impact gun it might be a little harder though, depends how tight the nut is. The crank pulley would have only taken about fifteen minutes except for needing to go buy a new belt. If I had installed both at once I think the stock belt would have fit since the alt pulley is slightly oversized (I believe). I'm going to school for automotive so I've done all the installs in their shop. It's much easier with a lift to get this stuff done. The impact tools come in handy too... I don't miss crawling around on the ground doing installs I was leaning towards the Tein H-Techs since the drop is more what I'm looking for. I'm not sure if I really want to drop on stock struts though. The price of a set of Konis and springs is pretty close to what I can get Tein's basic coilovers for. Decisions, decisions...I also installed a Megan Racing strut bar at the same time but I think it flexes way too much to be a useful piece. I want it for more than just show so I ordered the TRD bar.

1ZZ engines are cheap I've never heard of a 1ZZ engine having a problem and I did plenty of research on it. I did find a few reports of stock 2ZZ engines blowing oil pumps though. Apparently there is a balance problem with them from the factory that worsens with an UDP. But they already have the problem in stock trim.

yeah man im going to install the alternator pulley as well i bought one off my buddy that speciallizes in 1zz and 2zz engines i bought it from him for $50 and its crazy light the only wierd thing is the the alt pulley is a little bigger then the stock alt pulley i guess for a longer and bigger charge but i should have it in by mid october i also did a bypass mod today on the hoses that go from the throttle boddy to the engine and the one that goes from the intake manifold to the engine he did it for me for free and boy did i feel an increase not a huge one but it was a good one im satisfied...

It's the last week for my engines lab so the alt pulley will probably be done this week. I looked into the bypass mods but I think if I do go ahead and perform these mods I'll wait until the spring. The theory behind it is to reduce the heating of the intake air. But the possibility of icing the TB will keep me from doing them before winter. After the sway and strut bars I think I'm done modding until spring. The winter is a good time to collect parts

I have more planned Today I modified the intake so the dryflow filter actually fits. I cut about 2" off the bottom so the filter wouldn't be crushed up against the fog light. Then I modified the grille in front of the intake so it's open (which I doubt will actually help any). After that I disabled the ac with the defroster and added the diode so the sunroof doesn't stop closing in the middle. Tomorrow the parts for the center console power port should be here so I'll probably do that. On Wednesday the strut bar, sway bar, and alt pulley should be here. After that I'm done for a while But, planned are a JP midpipe, Borla tail section and an e-manage. Maybe I can talk myself into a TRD supercharger too. I also need to lower it a little. I'm thinking about Tein basic coilovers but I'm not sure about a 2.4" drop up front... seems a little low to me.

the S-Tech 2.4 inch drop is such a beautiful thing lol. You can even get away with stock wheels with that kind of a drop. I didn't have any problems with snow or getting stuck either her in michigan.

Pullies have less rotational mass so they free up horsepower. They should be avoided with a 2ZZ motor though. The price of the Cosmo UDP made it worth it to me. Personally I think they just copied Unorthodox's pulley, it looks identical except it doesn't have the etched writing on it.I already have a set of eighteens for the Vibe, they were on my Cavalier. I don't think I have a pic of them on the Vibe. I didn't put them on this year, I wasn't dropped yet. But they were on last year... Maybe a set of Tein Basics are in my future...

I thought I had a pic of them on the vibe... I can't find it though. They do look good on the grey Vibe. The car will probably be dropped in time for the rims to go on next spring. Originally the rims were on my '03 Cavalier, that car was supposed to be blue and carbon fiber so the grey rims fit it. I lost interest though thanks to the wonderful GM quality that car had... the tires only have about 10k on them after two summers of use.
